  1. Two ways of looking at this: Reliability, fairly comfortable, reasonable build quality would suggest the Magentis is not a bad car. It's the sister car to the Hyundai Sonata, and may even be built at the same factory (Kia C'eed and Hyundai i30 are). However, in terms of handling and ride quality, generally regarded as being well behind European standards. Fairly high emmissions mean higher road tax, and the engines are not particularly economical. But the real killer is depreciation. There's a reason you can buy a 2007 Magentis for £5200. In another two years you'll be offered about

Top of my head: Comfort Is Trumpcard, Randomly Operating Electrics Notwithstanding!
  17. Yep, I find this engine revs very well for a diesel, don't think I've gone much beyond 4500 though. Easily does 70 in 3rd gear if you're "pressing on" enthusiastically! Interesting iannez says max revs is 5200, that seems high. I've always wondered why there is no red line on the tachometer.
  18. Visa10E: Did you hear a 'bong' on startup the day the cruise control didn't work? (Like selecting Reverse) I occasionally get a bong on startup (see Post on Page 2 of Problems and Fixes). Last week it coincided with no cruise control (on a 190 mile journey :) ). However once the car was re-started, no bong and cruise control working fine. So not fuse or stalk, maybe clutch or brake switch - but while it's working I'm leaving well alone!
  19. Techbod, no, it's a manual. Paul h. Thanks, I'll check to see if reverse lights are on when ignition is switched on. I leave the car in 3rd gear, handbrake off when parked in the garage, so I wouldn't have thought so. Bizarrely, it hasn't made the noise the last two start-ups!
  20. Over the last few weeks, the car has made a bong exactly like the "putting in reverse" warning you get normally. This has started happening as soon as I turn the starter motor over. The car then starts and operates normally, no warning lights, no messages on display. The first time I select reverse (which is immediately as the car is nose first in the garage) the normal bong doesn't happen, but happens normally thereafter. Any ideas?
  21. Standard on Exclusive, option on some VTR+ models (depending on engine). I still love the new version, take a look at Autotrader to see how second hand values are holding.
  22. I also have a 2001 2.2 HDi but have not experienced anything as weird as this. I have however had two occasions when the fuel gauge showed 3/4 full when I'd just brimmed the tank, and another time it got stuck on 1/3 when there was under a 1/4 of a tank in. The first time I was worried but kfk assured me it would correct itself - it did next time I filled up each time. Has the Service light gone out yet? If not, I would be willing to guess that it will disappear in the next few days (or 6 unlock/start cycles). I can't help you with the cause or potential cost I'm afraid, and although I don't like the sound of the relays clicking and the beeps, you might at least take some comfort from the fact that the fuel gauge thing is not uncommon!
  23. Firstly is it a 2.0 or 2.2 HDi? My 2.2 HDi had a leak from the front, just inboard of the offside wheel, and all the front piping had to be changed. Different problem to yours I know. If it's a 2.2 it could be a little more complicated due to the H3 + suspension (Sport button). In my case the pipes were Citroen parts only, but the job was done by an independent Citroen specialist, saving me around £120 on the Labour.
  24. Aha, one of my favourite pastimes already! I've ended up with a 2001 Renault Megane Coupe Super Sport 1.6 auto. Very pretty little car! Collecting it tomorrow.
