  1. Is a BSI reset I can do without specialized equipment? The Haynes manual only writes about how to get it out or going to Citroen service dept.
  2. After my 2.2HDi C5 mk1 was left standing for a fortnight and after a previous nights torrential rain I started out on a new journey. The car gave its warning sounds and said tyre was flat, ABS fault was stated and EMS system wasn't functioning and the ABS (round) symbol was lit together with a similar triangular one (not shown in hand book) so assume it deals with EMS.The tyres seemed ok before setting out but after another tyre warning stopped and found front tyre was indeed a bit soft. I assumed the other warnings had been triggered by the soft tyre. After blowing up tyre, no more tyre warnings but still have the ABS and EMS warning. Have turned off EMS and don't get warning nor trangular symbol (at top of water temperature display needle). Any likely simple cause of ABS fault message like dodgy electrical connection near wheel(s)? This has just suddenly appeared for no apparent reason.
  3. Similar thing happened with my son's Xsara Picasso. Air con suddenly stopped working. Another post said if fluid gets too low pump won't kick in to prevent pump damage. Fluid topped up and air con now working.
  4. Top shroud held in quite tightly by switches. Best to pull both switches out slightly if top shroud needs removing. Cruise control switch slid in easily on new C5 with top shroud in place.
  5. Bought one off the internet in 2014. A lot cheaper than the Citroen one but is quite rusty after 1 year (Citroen DPF rust free after 14 years). Car (2001 Mk1 2.2HDi) passed MOT with new DPF so it could be working ok (exhaust smells like it did with Citroen DPF ie doesn't smell like a diesel car). Will probably buy a Citroen next time as I think internet one will rot away before innards get clogged.
  6. Have just aquired Mk1 C5 2.2HDi exclusive. This has come with a 6 speed autochanging CD player. Great in its day. How do I connect my iPod to the radio? I've tried using the radio transmitter option, but none that I have had will use a frequency just outside the broadcast band so finding quiet frequencies to cover a long distance journey is virtually impossible. I'd like to be able to connect using a mini-jack plug so how do wire in a mini-jack socket to the radio? Any other options suggested will be helpful.
  7. Got cruise control switch out. In the event, don't need to take top shroud (or steering wheel) off. The switch is held in by a small spring lever accessed from underneath using a small screwdriver to depress the lever. 'Tis not as shown in Haynes manual. To take radio controlling switch could be more complicated.
  8. Have re-read handbook and this says go to Citroen service centre to get it sorted if you regularly change tyres eg for winter/snow tyres or use tyres without sensors. Most C5s of the mk1 age didn't come with sensors so I guess the MOT testers won't know and if they do know, will they let a tyre down to see if it works? I think not.
  9. Thanks. Have got lower shroud off, but couldn't see how to get top off yet alone get at switch. Better get Haynes manual - have avoided it in past as it doesn't/didn't deal with 2.2HDi.
  10. Wish to replace MK1 2.2HDi cruise control switch on steering column with one from my old dead C5 2.2HDi. Can't see how the switch is fixed in place. How do I get it out?
  11. On mk1 C5 (don't know if this applies to later models) gaiter is held in the gear knob surround with 3 plastic clips and gentle pulling will remove it. The knob seems to have internal restraints. Sit well back in either front seat, firmly grasp the knob and pull strongly upwards. The gaiter is held onto the knob with a tiewrap. Pushing the knob back on, it will slide easily down the shaft and click into place.
  12. Thanks. Yes. Well maintained with cambelt water pump exhaust and DPF all changed fairly recently. On collecting the car, after stopping at a garden centre on my way home, I had one instance of the flat tyre message. As I said, all tyres including spare are ok. All have the sensors, but I'd rather dispense with these so I don't have problems when I replace tyres. What would happen if I replaced tyre sensors with standard tyre valves? I've managed to drive 50+ years without needing such a devices so I think I can manage a few more years without having them. I haven't tried talking to Citroen service centre yet to see if they can make the change. Not sure what the tyre pressure devices do or how they do it as I vary the pressures according to load and when towing caravan. This is why I'd like to ditch the system as I don't want to keep getting spurious unwanted warbles and messages on the display causing unneccessary distractions. I thought there might be an easy user way of dealing with this as you can in stopping automatic lighting switch on but obviously not.
  13. Regret, no such buttons on my car. Don't want to check tyre pressures, want to turn facility off.
  14. Just bought a Mk1 2.2HDi Exclusive to replace Mk1 2.2HDi SX (failed cambelt). New car has tyre pressure warning system and ESP, neither of which are mentioned in handbook which came with car. How does tyre pressure warning work? just had a flat tyre warning when all tyres and spare fully inflated. Would like to disable this feature as I don't want to get inaccurate messages. How do I go about doing this? What does ESP do? Is it of any use? I have no idea if this is working on this car. Didn't seem to need any help in dodgy conditions the the old C5 SX.
  15. Have disconnected battery for 30secs and reconnected. Opening door didn't do anything but turning on ignition got the suspension to rise to normal running height. This I can live with.
  16. OK. I have had my C5 for 10 years so I know a lot about the peculiarities of the suspension. What I want to know is how do I connect the battery to the suspension pump to force it to raise the car.
  17. My car's engine has failed and the battery has now gone into economy mode and stays in that mode despite giving it a thorough recharge. I have been working under the car to sort out the problem and the suspension up until now has adjusted itself in the normal running mode as usual by opening a door or the hatch. After a few jackings with a trolley jack to get more room under the car, the suspension has now gone into its lowest setting and won't respond to door or hatch opening. I can't get the battery out of economy mode nor raise the suspension as you need to run the engine to do this. My question is, is there any way I can get the suspension pump to work again to raise the car by making electrical connections somewhere in the car's electrical system?
  18. I've searched the forum using the search function and not found an article on how to get at the particulate filter. My C5 mk1 2.2 diesel needs its DPF replacing or removing and looking at the system under the car, I see 3 very rusty nuts holding the DPF body and CAT together (probably will need to use a nut splitter to remove these as the flats on the nuts have totally gone) and rusty nuts holding the exhaust system brackets to the car. The joint between the rear of the DPF and the remainder of the exhaust also looks very rusty and would probably not part too easily. Can someone advise me as to what is the easiest way to get at the DPF? (I'm a pretty good DIYer but not into welding) Thanks for any help.
  19. My driver's side interior handle has just snapped. How do you get at the remains of the handle to remove it? I've removed the screw and rubber plug that is behind the handle but nothing wants to move. I don't want to use any force yet as I don't want to break anything else. Any suggestions please.
  20. Regret image has not been reproduced.
  21. I know what I should see, from my previous letters on this subject, but what I actually see is like a black plastic inner lining of the mirror casing. Any access to the sensor and any wires that might connect to it is totally covered by this lining. I don't want to damage the inside of my mirror housing if the sensor isn't actually there on my car (2001 SX 2.2 HDi). If it isn't there, where is it? and if it there how do I get at it?
  22. Look at this site http://www.citroenet.org.uk/passenger-cars...c5/c5tech3.html Its the official citroen site describing the fap system. I found adding the eolys fluid a doddle, though a bit expensive. I reckon its best adding the stuff 1 litre at a time during the 10k service (early models) to spread the cost. Not yet had to do the particle filter so I don't know how difficult it is. The eolys fluid allows the system to burn off the carbon particles. Allowing the fluid to run out will eventually cause the particulate filter to clog up, ultimately fail sooner and could cost you in extra fuel and lost performance as it slowly chokes the exhaust system.
  23. 2001 C5 SX. Ext temp sensor faulty. Have taken n/s mirror out of housing. No sign of access to sensor (button under casing?). Faced with black plastic inner cover with mirror motor attached mounted in front of it. Can see wires to mirror heater and motor, but no wires to sensor. Is sensor really there? and if so how do I get at it?
  24. 1. 'Tis an advantage (to you) that you don't have the filter and fluid. Your pocket will be considerably heavier. The "green" brigade might be unhappy as (supposedly) its not as clean as they think it might be. 2. There are issues with all models of c5 - just trawl the various forums. You are either lucky or unlucky. I'm not sure they are seriously any worse than many other high tech cars these days from what I've read on other forums. Your ride, however, does seem a little harsh and might indicate a further investigation in the forums regarding spheres etc might be needed. 3. Your mpg seems rather low. It depends on where and how you drive. Lots of short journeys and brisk acceleration could account for this low figure. Only when I'm towing do I get less than 40mpg with my 2.2 HDi SX and am averaging 44-48mpg with a mix of country lane and motorway usage.
  25. Tank filled. Excess parts not used and still don't know what they are for - perhaps used on different models. Removed aluminium tray but couldn't find any drain hole other than disconnecting one of the 2 pipes feeding the system. A can of worms I didn't want to open. So no need to remove tray and so no need to get under car. Tried hanging bottle from door aperture but not very stable. My modus operandii was thus - Raise car off ground by using concrete block or wheel ramps. Raise car to max height using suspension. Remove push fit cap (squeeze 2 white release tabs on the cover). Cut off redundant fittings on filling hose and insert cut end in filling/level hole. Wedge pipe in hole to stop it sliding out (I used a wedge of kitchen towel) and connect the new fluid bottle to the connecting pipe. Drill small hole in base edge of bottle while holding bottle upside down. Rest bottle on top of tyre with hole uppermost until gravity does its job and transfers liquid to tank. My Y reg C5 2.2 SX has done 90k miles and has (as yet) shown no fluid level warnings. It took 4 litres without overflowing so probably needs more to top it up completely. Draining the tank (if it can be done without removing one of the 2 pipes) will allow the full charge of 5 litres without the risk of spillage. Otherwise use a drip tray under the car and empty the last bottle with care and save spare liquid in one of the redundant recycling bottles for later use. It can be done without using blocks or wheel ramps, but a little extra height will make the job easier.
