When I had my Xantia after every service (it had done 95000) the oil always looked fresh even after several 100 miles. It did use some and was topped up correctly. However now I have the C5 110 diesel (5000 on the clock) I notice that the state of the dipstick oil is VERY black - is this typical of diesel engines generally given the type of fuel they burn or is the oil contaminated relatively quickly? Honest John (Telegraph) always goes againat the manufacturer and recommends oil chnges at 5-7K and not the 10K in the Handbook. Anyone got any factual views on both Q's please?

The oil change interval on the C5 HDi is 12,500 miles.

Mine has got 5,400 miles on the clock and I have been thinking about changing the oil. However if you think about it logically, even at 12,500 miles, Citroen would have put in a fair margin for all that mileage covered say, in city driving.

It is the nature of diesel engines that causes the oil to look more 'contaminated' than a petrol engined car with the same mileage. However unlike diesel, petrol is a solvent. So in theory diesel should also act as a lubricant too. Citroen's petrol engines cars have 2 year or 20,000 miles oil change intervals.

The 110 HDi engine is fitted to many different models of vans throughout the PSA/Citroen range. I don't think those engines are any different to the ones fitted in the cars. The 110 HDi engine is noted for achieving starship type mileages in excess of 400,000 miles without giving trouble, so with a kinder existence in a C5 it should outlast the car.

I guess it depends on how long you think you may keep the car. By the time mine has 380,000 miles on the clock and is burning oil, it will probably be on its third or fourth owner..............not my problem!

My oil has been in the C5 110 for about 1000 miles now(Changed at 7000 miles when I bought the car), it is gaining a tinge of colour, and the colour is very similar to my last Xsara 1.4 petrol at about 4000 miles after changing.

Dads Picasso oil is pitch black at 6000 miles.
