AlanFC Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 Has anyone noticed excessive oil consumption whilst running in a HDI 16v C3? Also when accelerating through 2,500 rpm or so car starts to vibrate such that rear view mirror is all blurred and it sounds a little rough (the engine not the mirror!). Does this happen to all C3 Hdi 16v or am I just lucky? This is not a moan , merely an observation (at the moment). Regards, AlanFC Quote
Tony_T Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 Nope you aint on your own Alan, mine sounds a bit rough/thrashy as well on acceleration (doesnt need to be heavy either), the sound reminds me a petrol car i used to have that was bad for "pinking". As to the eccessive oil consumption its only done 400 mile so no comment i'm afraid at the mo this end. Quote
Guest Mark A Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 Alan - by 'excesssive oil consumption', how much and where do you think it is going? An oil leak somewhere? The stuff being suffiently expensive that you won't want to be losing it overboard ... I'm thankful that ours uses rather less oil than the vehicle it replaced at any stage in its life. It's also had clean exhaust from the start, and the oil dropped from close to the top mark to around two thirds to the bottom mark in the first 6000 miles - the dashboard indicator giving '6 squares' when new and 1 square at the 2/3 down stage. (Unrelated, but a friend remarked, having just stalled a LR defender on a lumpy track, that electronically controlled diesels now are programmed to do anything, *anything* - including stall - rather than produce any sort of black smoke ...) If you've a 'Car starts to vibrate' at a particular engine speed rather than something trivial and loose resonating, then that might be one for the dealer asap especially combined with oil consumption as the two together in a new engine may be trying to tell you something: such as something unbalanced, debris, or a faulty bearing, having chewed an oil seal. We do have the 'trivial and loose resonating' - something that sounds like an angry insect beneath the LHS dashboard at very close to 2500 rpm but that doesn't sound like your prob. Oh and as Tony says, it doesn't seem to be the sort of engine that conceals what it's up to from its occupants ... Quote
AlanFC Posted May 14, 2003 Author Posted May 14, 2003 I reckon its about 0.75litres in 1,000 miles. The vibration is enough to blur vision in the rear view mirror. Its not as if the car is shaking itself to pieces or anything but its definetly noticeable. Its not leaking oil as far as I can see. I have noticed that the oil level indicator is mad. Sometimes it registers all six segments flashing (ie. overful). Next it registers two segments, then four then six. If I remember Mooseshaver had a problem with his also. If you are out there in 'C3 land' , was yours the same problem? Regards, AlanFC Quote
Guest Mark A Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 > about 0.75litres in 1,000 miles That sounds worth investigating. Wonder where it's going if there's no leak? Does the C3 scrub its exhaust of some of the particulate stuff, and therefore is there an over-gungy filter to examine somewhere? The dashboard oil level indicator notices when the vehicle hasn't been parked on level ground, but other than that seems consistent and is giving an early warning of the oil approaching the bottom mark on the dipstick (which is no bad thing). Regards, AlanFC[/quote] Hello Allan, Bit worried about posting stuff that is not completly positive incase those who don't like to see the C3 in a bad light complain. ;) My oil guage does not even show itself. It is just simply not there. Its had a new oil sensor, and a new Dash Display was ordered, but when it came (Friday) the garage were unsure if it was actualy for me or not so still awaiting them to ring and tell me. JonC3 Posted October 9, 2004 Posted October 9, 2004 From new, my car used maybe a litre of oil in the first 1000 miles, then it has settled down. It is nearly due its 12500 service, and the top up peformed in the first month has been the only one it has needed (Ex HDi 16v) Quote
scottp Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 got mine in Sept 03 has now done 27k and i have not needed to fill it up once myself. ignore the on-board indicator, it reads wrong constantly, pop the bonnet and do it the old fashioned way. just before my 25k service it was down to about 1/3 full. I was dubious after 12.5k service as when i took the car away the oil guage said 4 boxes, i thought it should be full, checked by hand and as if by magic it was. if the engine has been running the guage reads less as the oil hasn't settled.
