Wrinkles Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Hi I have an C5 110 diesel on a 51 plate, 57,000 miles, for some time now it has been losing oil from the gearbox. Not any great amount just sweating at this stage, but there is a small loss. My dealer wants the equivalent of the national debt to fix it but I will be content to top it up when necessary. Although I am fairly certain the loss so far is no where near critical I would like to at least check the level, That's if I could find the filler aperture. It's a bit tight in the engine bay so knowing where to look would be a help I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction or better still give precise directions. My thanks, in anticipation Quote
Johndouglas Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 If you're loosing oil from the gearbox it's probably one of the two driveshaft oil seals. To replace them DIY will cost you in the region of £6 per side, but it's quite a bit of work to remove the driveshaft first. To top up the gearbox get the car standing level. Jack up the n/s wheel and remove it. Take off the inner wheel cover, and you will see the end of the gearbox. Oval in shape. Remove the large screw which is at about four o'clock position. Inject some 75/80 gear oil into the hole until it begin to drip out. Replace the bolt and tighten. Quote
Wrinkles Posted August 2, 2006 Author Posted August 2, 2006 Excellent JohnDouglas :) , Many thanks for that, I have scoured the internet for diagrams etc all to no avail. I shall try that on Saturday, when I intend to give the beast an oil change too. :D Incidentally the oil loss is from a joint between sections of the box, no more than sweating, but there is leakage. Wrinkles Posted August 7, 2006 Author Posted August 7, 2006 My thanks, it would seem were a little premature. Having removed the wheel, then spent some considerable time removing the plastic liner . This due to the two allen head screws being corroded and the allen key slots rusted away, requiring them to be drilled out. Eventually I exposed the end of the gearbox. The only visible bolt at 4 o'clock was on the lowest point of the gearbox which although possibly a drain, could not be a filler. Further probing and removal of any other likely bolts confirmed that they were all just that "Bolts". One I was unable to get to due to it being well out of reach of my longest extension was at about the 2 o'clock position. with odds of a pound to a pinch of Sh** I'll bet that was the one. Quote
Johndouglas Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Sorry if I have misinformed you, but looking at the French Revue Technique the picture I see looks just the same as the gearbox was on my previous Xantia and BX. Quote
kfk Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 There is no oil level screw on this box. Only way to do it is drain oil and then refill throught the breather hole in the top. All gearboxes take 1.8Ltrs Quote

My thanks, in anticipationThe oil filler / level is half way up the rear of the gearbox housing .It's not easy to find . Remove the undertray , with the car jacked up and supported lie on your back and slide under the car 'till your at the rear of the subframe there is a gap large enough to get your hand in .Run your hand up the rear side of the gear housing in line with the drain plug and you'll find the filler , it's a 21mm head , it's easy enough to get a spanner in , there is an 8 mm square on it but that's more difficult. Hope this helps , I was worried when I read the reply that said it can only be filled through the breather , not so , don't try that!! Quote
