C2brakesgirl Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 How long do the brakes last on a citroen C2!! I've been told that I have to have my discs and pads replaced after 17000 miles and that this is 'normal' as the brakes wear out the discs usually around 20000 miles in not only C2s, but other citroen models. This is my first citroen -and possibly my last...with this type of maintenance cost. i'm used to replacing brake pads with an occasional replacement of discs after many more miles than this. Anyone with a C2 have you had to replace both? Quote
wozza Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 brake pads and disc are things which can wear in a few thousand miles or tens of thousands how you drive makes the most impact on them. If you brake hard and late etc there gonna wear down quicker. does seem a little too early to be replacing them though. Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 How far does the warranty extend? or is this something that is not covered?!? :P that reminds me, i was out with my mates and we came across a girl in a C2 around Gatwick, pulled up next to her on a dual carriageway and started to have a (VERY staggered) conversation, i think she thought we wanted a race! Nope! Just some fun! :D She could tell that we were in a C4 which is very comendable! :D :D Good on her! :P Think the chances of her being you are VERY VERY slim! :P :D Quote
kfk Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Warranty doesnt extend to brake pads and discs - wear and tear. Have the discs worn out......in which case did they measure them and confirm they are below minimum thickness. Or did the discs run metal to metal and score the surface (noisy). Or are they corroded? citroeneddie Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 I've done 49k on my original pads and shoes, but may need changing at 50k service. There would be no mileage stipulation, it's all down to driving style. Quote
Guest CE05LDB Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 My brother had to habe his break pads changed on his previous C3 1.4i SX Auto at 15,000 miles. I think my break pads will need changing soon. im nearly on 12,900. They have been squeeking since 7,000 miles. Some days you can hear like metal against metal and other days nothing. How old is your C2? Quote
C2brakesgirl Posted September 7, 2006 Author Posted September 7, 2006 My car is 2 years old and I'm an experienced driver I use my gears more than my brakes. My fiat [now my husbands] has never had new disks and its 8 years old. I've been told that it’s the norm on a C2 to replace them every 20,000 miles maximum!! I know its not covered on warranty and I understand there is 1mm left on the disk so its very close to the recommended minimum. I don't know when the pads wore out [no warning light] and the 2 year service 1000 miles ago passed them. [same garage] Its been noisy and the garage supposedly looked at that and said it was dirt in the brakes [again 1000 miles ago]I don't drive round Gatwick but I do know what a C4 is! Quote
wozza Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 If they have to be replaced so often maybe better going for some upgraded discs and pads they may last a bit longer at least. As every 20k seem a bit daft saying that though my last almera needed all 4 dics and pads replacing after 26k Quote

If the discs are still 1mm off there minimum thickness i would ask the question why they need replacing. The discs from new have a wear limit of 2mm there fore the're half worn! As for the noise they were making, have they worn down to the discs (metal to metal) or was it just the raised outer edge of the disc causing the noise? Quote
jonfish Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 Maybe kfk will know the answer to this but I understood that pads now last a lot less than they used to due to replacement of asbestos. As for disks I heard that if you are the sort who uses your brakes heavily then sits on the pedal at junctions etc. then the disks don't cool very evenly and so warp and this might reduce their life. I tend to console myself with this thought as I sit dazzled behind another idiot - so many !!. Please say it's true. Quote
iannez Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 pads on modern day cars are made alot harder so they are more effective. the more the pad eats into the disc when braking the more friction it causes resulting in better brakes. thats why they are wearing discs so quick. most citroen brakes squeal from day 1. more so if they have rear discs.pads and discs will wear quicker on automatic car as they have very little engine braking Quote
citroeneddie Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 At my C5 50k service last week, I was expecting change of all pads and discs, but they are still good until 62.5k service next January. Depends on driving style. My brakes have squealed from day one. Quote
bigbri838 Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 since industry was banned from using asbestos in construction and vehicle production, the motor industry had to find another way of dissippating the heat generated during braking. The answer was to increase the metal content in the new asbestos free brake pad material. Unfortunateley this led to brake disc life being substantially reduced. Quote
