billy nomates Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I've just bought a 2006 C4 1.6 hdi and when you start it from cold it only fires or three cylinders and smokes a lot. after a couple of minutes the fourth cylinder springs into life and its perfect. I've taken the injection connector off when i've just started it and it makes no difference then when you put it back on, after a couple of minutes it starts working proper. It seems like theres some electrical problem but i've tested it and theres power going to the injector. Could it be the injector is playing up??? Quote
paul.h Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Welcome to the forum. If it is smoking a lot possibilities can include:- burning oil due to a worn engine or worn turbo (the 1.6 hdi is known for the turbo wearing/failing)- the engine temperature sensor giving a wrong value so the fuel/air ratio is wrong- an egr valve fault (the egr valve should not open until the engine is hot) or a split in its actuator vacuum piping somewhere.- a fault on one cylinder so it has low compression - you say it only fires on 3 cylinders- fuel injector fault leaking excess fuel What colour is the smoke - blue, black, white ?If you have a code reader that does live data you can see what temperature the engine coolant sensor gives - with a cold engine it should be the outside temp so about 5 to 10°C and then increase to about 95°C when the engine is hot. I've asked a mechanic and he thinks a faulty injector, but hes not sure. The turbo is perfect and when its warmed up its a flying machine. The engine temperature is normal and there is no oil and water mixing. When it starts its running on 3 cylinders then the 4th one kicks in... Weird one for you tech heads :) Quote
coastline taxis Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 would go with a duff injector sticking/leaking back .Another other issue to rule out is the valves they are hydraulic and as the 1.6 is prone to turbo failure due to poor oil. get the oil and filter changed also put a flush through it and see if that helps b4 changing the injector Quote
