I have recently purchased my Citroen C4, petrol 2007. I usually drive with my windows closed and radio on, however yesterday I had radio off, and windows open. As I was driving along, at random intervals I could hear a rattling. Sounded like I was driving over a grill/drain. Thought there may be something loose on the underside, but goes over speed humps with no issue, and cant see anything hanging down. Any idea's?? Thanks

Maybe a heat shield loose and vibrating. Maybe the exhaust vibrating. Even something stuck in a tyre tread. Or maybe a brake pad r4attling. Time to start investigating.

If it sounded as though you were going over a drain, then was the noise actually a problem with the car or was it the road surface and tyre noise ?

Thanks for your replies. Heat shield has been suggested so will look into that. But I thought I'd hear that pretty much all the time if it was loose, but I only hear it every now and then.

Haven't heard of Roll Bar....so will look into that too.

Yes, it sounds as if I'm driving over a grill or loose drain (for about 2 seconds)....even though the road I'm actually on could be smooth. I can hardly hear it when I'm driving with the windows up, so definitely an external noise, and sounds like it's from the rear of the car.

One more thing. I don't know if I've imagined this, but driving home from the school run this morning, I could hear a knocking.....I think. I could be just looking for issues now. i've had absolutely no luck with cars.

Ok, So I cleared out my boot and went for a spin....No knocking heard.

Seems to do this noise at lower speeds, and on acceleration.

If it is the anti roll bar drop links these tend to knock as you go over bumps or kerbs. To check them properly they need to be disconnected at one end to see if the joints have worn out and are loose.

The exhaust heat shields can corrode at the mounting bolts and become loose and give an annoying rattle (happened to our C3). A large washer over the bolt will fix them back.

You could also try with the rear seat backs in the down position in case they are rattling, also the rear seat belt buckles could be clipped to their stalks so they can not knock against the car sides. You could look at the exhaust mountings in case they are worn/perished and the exhaust back boxes have a metal band around them which can rust through so the back box is not supported - if the band needs replacing Citroen do not sell it but they can be obtained from sellers on ebay as a universal exhaust bracket.

Ok. It was the heat shield after all. NOW, ANOTHER PROBLEM I had a Citroen Picasso, 06 before this car which had similar issues as I am experiencing now. Yesterday whilst driving,I experienced a big jolt, 'auto Gear Fault' appeared on the instrument panel and the car went into 3rd gear and wouldn't change out of it until I restarted the car. I had this with my last picasso, which ended up with me having to scrap the car as it needed the pressure regulator valves changed and was just too expensive to repair. I have brought it back to the dealer I purchased it from (NOT a Citroen dealer), and they have said NO faults showed up, but they are changing the brake pads and that will solve the problem. Does this sound likely? Brake pads could cause Auto Gear Fault??

I dont want to end up with a car that is beyond repair (economicaly).

Thanks

I've just bought an '05 C3 which has a rattle after I've gone about 50 miles. This rattle disappears for a short while if I touch the footbrake pedal.

Any ideas? I'll have a nosey at the front brakes if I can't suss it.

That sounds as though the pads are loose in the housings.   Maybe a previous owner has fitted some inferior pads that are not quite up to spec.   But also the holding springs may not have been fitted correctly

Thanks, I'll take a look at them.
