Juhovv Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Hi, I'd like to know if a gearbox from a xsara with 1.6 16v engine will fit my xsara -99 with 1.6 8v engine. Both boxes are MA5 but if I have understood rightly, not all ma5 boxes fit my engine. The bearing on the 5th gear is broken and I'd probably try to change the 5th gear first and if it doesnt work, then the whole gearbox. Here are some pictures of the 5th gear and the needle bearings I found when I opened the cover. Would it be safe to only change the 5th gear from another box? All other gears have been working fine. http://m.imgur.com/a/6kpXg Thank you. Quote
paul.h Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Welcome to the forum. Bearing shells have a part number and make on them which you can use at any bearing shop to get a new one. This should be a lower cost than getting a replacement gearbox. A Citroen dealer will also sell you the needle bearing, which if I have got the right part may be part no. 234311 and cost about £14 but you need to check this. You could check the other bearings in the gearbox for roughness and play to see if they need replacing but you would need to open the gearbox to do that. Whether the 8v and 16v gearboxes are interchangeable I do not know but the Citoren parts diagrams may help. You can see these as a free service if you register on the service.citroen site as another professional and a member of the Citroen Owners Club http://service.citroen.com/do/changerParametres Quote
Juhovv Posted July 25, 2015 Author Posted July 25, 2015 Thanks for the Citroen service site! That's a wonderful resource, though I couldn't confirm if the gearboxes are interchangeable. There was no information of the engine clutch housing for my car so I can't compare it with the other car. And the gearbox codes were different, maybe because the ratios of the gears don't match. Maybe it would be ok otherwise, but I can't confirm that.. I'll probably take the 5th gear apart today and see if it's just the needle bearing (234311, that was correct) that needs fixing. It's possible that those metal needles have done some damage inside the box already so it might be just better to change it completely.. Thanks. Quote
