Mat Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Anyone else noticed that a lot more heat comes out of the vents when going round roundabouts or right hand bends ? Quote
wozza Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Cant say i have noticed this. Just stays at a nice constant temp for me. Quote
Rich_Eason Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Yes! I thought this was just me being weird! Quote
Welshguy Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Yup happens to me as well. The 1.4 engine must not produce a lot of heat as well because in the recently cold mornings the engine temp bar will go between 2 and 3 bars, particularly if you have the heaters on more than "1". Quote
hertsnminds Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Is the temp change speed related? If it is it could just be the water in the cooling system being sloshed about. Same way the fuel gauge reading changes if you park the car sideways on a hill. (Just picturing forum members spending 10 mins on a roundabout getting faster and faster to check the heating temp  ) IanBlack 55 VTR+ Quote
Rich_Eason Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 I think it must be a change in air pressure increasing the air being fed into the blower and thus giving the impression of it heating up. The water system is under pressure and doesnt really slosh about as this would effect the heater matrix. If you did you would get air locks. I used to get this heating effect on my old Focus too but only on certain roundabouts, usually the tight ones  Quote
bill03 Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Air has mass therefore inertia. You turn air is slower to follow. Quote

Rich_Eason Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 But that would mean then that the air on the passenger side would would be coming faster than the driver side due to centrifugal forces? (or should I shut up?) Quote
Rich_Eason Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 More Questions than answers! How Fat would I need to be to be bullet proof? If I drink a glass of milk, how do I make it come out of my tear ducts? Why if I'm traveling on a train at 120mph and I decide to get out of my seat and walk to the loo and decide on the way to jump up in the air, does the train not pass beneath my feet at 120mph? Where does white poo come from? - not the specific part of the body Answers on a postcard... Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 How Fat would I need to be to be bullet proof? Too fat to survive. Why if I'm traveling on a train at 120mph and I decide to get out of my seat and walk to the loo and decide on the way to jump up in the air, does the train not pass beneath my feet at 120mph? Because you also are travelling at 120mph! Quote
Mat Posted November 4, 2006 Author Posted November 4, 2006 (Just picturing forum members spending 10 mins on a roundabout getting faster and faster to check the heating temp  ) I did do three laps of the roundabout the other night. Was almost half tempted to try it in the opposite direction - there was no traffic around. My boring common sense side of me said not to. Quote
Rich_Eason Posted November 4, 2006 Posted November 4, 2006 Living in South Gloustershire you get used to roundabouts...for some reason the council traffic planners believe that if there are traffic flow issues, stick a roundabout in. Take for example If I travel down the road for a distance of approx 3/4 mile i will negotiate a total of...8 roundabouts. This is a major commuting route and they seem to think that roundabouts are the source of all solutions. Need to slow traffic down, stick a roundabout in. Need to speed it up...stick a roundabout in. I remember one night I thought I would see how fast I could go round a certain roundabout in my Cooper, nice and tight, cambered = great fun, only to find that as I entered the roundabout I think the Exxon Val'des had previously negotiated it, span past the first exit sideways and ended up facing the wrong way out of the second exit  Completly irresponisble and never to be repeated again however Luckily damage free! Quote
billynibbles Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Anyone tempted to test this 'warmer when cornering' theory had best be warned by the experience of a lady friend of mine in her M-B 230 Kompressor. She went round a roundabout new to her at just over 30 mph. Being lost, she went round it again, not realising that a mobile speed camera unit had nabbed her twice. 6 points on her licence in less than 45 seconds for 32 and 33 mph in a 30 limit. Vindictive b******ds. Yes, she is blonde. No wonder she was down her local tyre fitters next day having both of her slightly iffy front tyres replaced. She needed another 6 points like a hole in the head. Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Speed cameras on roundabouts? Never seen that before Quote
Seefour05 Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 No science from me, but I have noticed that the heat dissipates when cornering. Its almost like the heat forgot to turn with the car! Quote

GRUMPY Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Assuming you have the set the vents straight then as the car turns you will move into the airstream from the vents. Is it you that has noticed this or your passengers?? I only feel this when turning left. Quote

I only feel this when turning left.Grumps How fast do you take your corners so that when you go round you find yourself moving across the airflow of the vents? By fixing the direction of the vents wont change as you go round the bends...I mean Citroen have done that with headlights but is there a requirement for air vents?! :P :o  *Slowly seeing this topic degenerating and more science needing to be applied.* Quote
GRUMPY Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 I'm not sure how fast the air is moving when it leaves the vent but I'm sure it is a lot slower than 10mph. So if you start to turn at 10 mph you will move through the air that left the vent a second or two before so it feels as if it is blowing hotter because the car is turning. Of course this will depend on how fast the fan is and the position of the vents. Quote
Safety Engineer Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 I thought speed cameras had to a] be on a straight road, and b] proove you were more than 10% over the limit Yes they do have to be on a staright road, some camera partnerships have had cameras set up to catch drivers entering/leaving a roundabout but when challenged they haven't been upheld, so a good reason to challenge the ticket, also as the car is travelling around the roundabout the reading (assuming a laser camera is more prone to the 'slip effect' where the camera overreads the speed). Over the 10% + 2mph is quoted as the prosecution threshold by ACPO, however, it is guidance NOT law and as such the camera partnerships can enforce at 1mph over the limit if they wish. Is it all a scam and a money making exercise?? To right it's a scam. Quote
