Hi really new to this so bare with me. My husband has bought a Citroën c5 2.2 hdi diesel estate (2003) problem is the fan is not working, we were told by seller that she was checked out and she needs a blower motor. Now after reading this forum I think we know where to find it (behind glove box passenger side) do we disconnect battery before we start, do we switch off passenger airbag, where can we find instructions on how to do this correctly. we did telephone a parts department to get a second hand blower motor but they asked how many pins did it have as there are two types. Would really like to get this sorted as it is getting colder by the day (soon be winter).

Many thanks

Welcome to the forum.

The Haynes workshop manual for the C5 is worth getting. It covers most things but not the 2.2 hdi engine, if you want this the Citroen service box manual on 3 dvds can be obtained through ebay.

Did the previous owner try replacing the blower fuse and also the blower speed control resistor before deciding it needed a new blower ? To check which part you need you should look at the parts diagrams using your car VIN (VIS), then use the Citroen part number to find the right one. You can see the diagrams as a free service if you register on the service.citroen site as an other professional non emergency services and as a member of the Citroen Owners Club http://service.citroen.com/do/changerParametres you may need to select your language first. Once on the diagrams use your VIN top left to find your car.

According to the Haynes manual to remove the blower on a right hand drive car, the glove box is removed, then disconnect the blower wiring connectors, then release the retaining tab and rotate the motor anti-clockwise to free it from the housing so it can be removed. To remove the glovebox it says rotate the fasteners anti-clockwise and release the scrivet to remove the panel above the passenger footwell, remove 2 torx bolts at the lower edge of the box, open the lid and remove 8 torx bolts holding the box to the fascia, prise out the light and disconnect its wiring connector, remove the glove box. It is up to you if you disconnect the battery but just leaving the key out of the ignition switch is probably all that is needed. If you do want to disconnect the battery follow the procedure in the C5 Common Problems topic to avoid any problems by disconnecting it too quickly before the bsi has shut down.

Well checked blower motor which blowed very well so changed resistor put motor back in and worked for a minute then smoked appeared so we unplugged it again. Do you think I need a new blower motor as told or is something else wrong. Thanks guys.

Where did the smoke come from ?

I have read on here where sometimes the resistor pack is replaced but does not last long and the blower has needed replacing. Does the blower spin freely when checked by hand ? You could also check the blower fuse is the correct rating in case a higher value one has been put in and if it was the wiring smoking.

Wires were warm, smoke came from under the dash, we tested the blower with an 18 volt battery and it whirled around good style. Put it back in car as thought it was working, got a new resistor and changed it over, the motor worked as I said but had to un plug again because of the smoke. fixed the old resistor and replaced that but same happened (smoke) should I get a new motor blower and resistor and try that or do you think it will smoke again. Don't know anything about wiring at all.

You could try the blower again out of the car against the car battery so 12 volts. If there is smoke from the wiring and it is getting hot then it must be taking a higher amperage than normal which will need the fuse checking since this should fail before the wiring melts. Also if higher than normal it would suggest a fault with the blower. If higher amps this could be causing the resistor to fail.

The Haynes manual gives the blower fuse as F18, 40 amps in the engine fuse box but this should be checked against your handbook.

Welcome to the forum.

Post 2 has some notes from the Haynes manual for removing the blower on the 2001 to 2008 C5. Let us know how you get on or if you need any help.

If you're seeing smoke and the wiring is getting hot it seems to me that there's a short circuit somewhere. I'm not familiar with the circuitry so I don't know what the resistor is for. Does it control the fan speed? Anyway it might be as well to check the resistance of the resistor and calculate the amps it's likely to be taking (V=I x R).

If the 40 amp fuse blows it means that the unit is generating about 500 Watts so no wonder the wires get hot!
