peterbryant Posted June 23, 2017 Posted June 23, 2017 I own a 2013 2.0ltr C5 Exclusive , I recently had to replace the engine oil dipstick as the end had snapped off , I purchased a genuine replacement but that has recently broken as well even though it was never used . Has anybody come across this before if so do they know the cause ? Quote
paul.h Posted June 23, 2017 Posted June 23, 2017 If the part is less than a year old you can take it back to Citroen. Quote
MikeLane Posted June 24, 2017 Posted June 24, 2017 (edited) Coincidentally there's a similar topic here: http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/topic/24768-dipstick-tip-slip/?do=findComment&comment=94008 Edited June 24, 2017 by MikeLane Quote
MikeLane Posted June 24, 2017 Posted June 24, 2017 As a further note, I've never found my dipstick to be very useful. Whenever I pull it out it seems to have much too much oil on it. I wipe it, push it back in and then check again. I think it leaves a lot of oil in the tube which gets picked up when it's withdrawn and gives a false reading. However, I've never had a low oil warning between services so..... Quote
paul.h Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 I usually wipe a dipstick and then push it back in and then take it out to check the level. I once read that on a Ford this is since the oil level goes up the dipstick a bit but then can not drain back down until the top is lifted out to let in air. Our 2010 C3 with the petrol vti engine uses oil, about 1 litre every 2000 miles. It has always done this and is a (poor) design feature but when the level needs topping up a check oil level message is given. The plastic ended dipstick is not that easy to use though since it seems to pick up oil from the dipstick tube each time you pull out the dipstick. Quote
MikeLane Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 I had a friend who bought, brand new, an Austin A40. He found that it used 1pint of oil about every 300 miles, so he complained to the dealer. The dealer checked with Austin (BMC) whose response was "It's within the limits!"No wonder ......... Quote
paul.h Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 My first few cars all used oil at about 1 pint every 300 miles so I would use a cheap 20w50 oil but once off BL cars oil use has been minimal. On the 2010 C3 though it uses Total quartz INEO ECS 5w30 (same as hdi dpf engines) which might be a bit thin but I have read if a thicker oil is used it can result in damage to the engine. Quote
MikeLane Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 (edited) There's a note in Haynes saying that engines with a DPF must use 5W 30 fully synthetic oil to ACEA B5.I too now use Total Ineo Quartz 5W 30 (from Amazon @ £28 for 5 litres). Edited June 26, 2017 by MikeLane Quote
paul.h Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 I have just bought 3 x 5 litres of this oil direct from the following supplier, £66 including delivery which was only 2 days. This will do the C5 oil change (done today), the C3 next month and then for topping up the C3. A lot cheaper than £15 a litre from our Citroen dealer since they only stock the 1 litre size. https://www.nielsencdg.co.uk/acatalog/Total-Quartz-Ineo-ECS-5W30-Engine-Oil-Peugeot--HDI-Citroen-5L-TOT_151261.html Quote
MikeLane Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 I get my servicing done by a local Indie now but ALWAYS take my own oil ! Quote
