Welshguy Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 As some of you may be aware, my car is in with the dealership at the moment who are attempting to fix the reoccuring Gearbox linkage knocking problem. I popped in this afternoon to test drive the car, as they cannot replicate the problem, and unfortunately neither can I. When I drove the car though I could instantly feel the difference in the gearbox...it was smooth and fluid - usually it is a bit stiff and nowhere near as fluid. There was also NO knocking. I asked the technican what he had done to get this improvement...and he said he hadn't touched the geabox bar "pulling/moving" the gearbox cables out of the way to get a better look in the gearbox. What is everybody else's gearbox like...smooth or not? Every time I visit the dealership I tend to get this improvement in the gearbox, but it never seems to last, except the time when I had spacers fitted to cure the knocking noise which cured it for about 3 months. The technican confirmed to me that they are still fitted etc, so surely my gearbox problems are related to these cables? Kfk...any comments? I'd love any help/advice offered! Quote
kfk Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I'm not aware of any problems of the kind you have experienced, nor any idea of the spacers they have used to overcome the problem in the past, so i'm afraid i'm not gonna be much use in this. Quote
Rich_Eason Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 A complete suggetsion... Its not something as simple as a selector return spring or something? I've had one of these go on a previous car and the gear stick looses all feeling and "selection" feel in the box. The selector can also feel lumpy and not particulary positive. Perhaps need a bit of lube or replacement? Cost of repair...0.92p +VAT for spring £145 labour to undo 4 screws, replace spring, re tighten screws. So did it myself Quote
Stuey Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 a bit of topic but I nipped to fetch my car from the dealer last night as the door locks stopped working, I was having a chat with the service manager and he was giving me some info about what you can have under warranty. My spring in my key has gone loose so the metal bit flops out, he has ordered me a new one FOC. I mentioned the problems that some people have been having with clutches and he said that they have heard that some of the early cars have been throwing them with minimal warning. He said that if the clutch feels even remotely different, spongy or starting to slip then bring it in as they go shortly after this. A trait that PSA clutches have, give you a little warning and then pack up, just like wozza's did. We also had a chat about what mods you can get away with. Remaps are OK as long as they are not found, sports filters are OK but swap back to the standard if going in for any work. The only thing you can really get away with is the exhaust. So really you will need to swap anything you change back to standard before you take it to the dealer... Quote

He said that if the clutch feels even remotely different, spongy or starting to slip then bring it in as they go shortly after this. I'm worried now! My pedal has been feeling a little graunchy right on the top 1/5 on complression and release of the pedal. What seemed odd is I moved my seat forward by a notch or two and this seemed to illiminate it. If you push the pedal lightly with the engine off up and down you can hear a slight squeeking noise I'm hoping that all is needed is a bit of grease or lube of somesorts on the return spring?..or do I? Is this the sign of worse things? Quote
Stuey Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 I wouldnt worry about a squeek to much...the service guy said "spongy" or the pedal has all but no feel in it...might be worth nipping it in and let a tech take it out for a quick check... Quote

Ah its not that bad just feels like the return spring is slipping on the pedal arm or something. It needs to go in anyway to get some bits sorted out on it just a matter of being able to get time off work... Quote
wozza Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 Mine went from spongy, and juddering and slipping when i gave it too much to not being able to engage at all in a few days of city use. Suppose that 2 hours stuck in traffic in the morning constantly playing with the clutch killed it. But least I now know there is a real problem with some of the earlier ones like mine. Thats been acknowledged. Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 I have been worried about the clutch on mine since that one day when it suddenly changed without warning, but when it went in for the service, i asked my dad to mention the clucth, and all they said that the biting point had moved higher and that i will need one next service!! Is this a cop-out? Becuase my clutch has had no feel what-so-ever since that day when it all changed :D Quote
Welshguy Posted February 17, 2007 Author Posted February 17, 2007 Went into Citroen yesterday afternoon to have the new gear cables fitted - Still doesn't fix what I want...the gearbox is now smoother, but I'm still experiencing a knockingnoise when the clutch is depressed and when in gear and tapping on the accelerator. Any ideas people? It's driving me mad, and even time I drop the car into Citroen theycan't replicate the problem.  Quote
Stuey Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 I am getting a funny feeling that is a trait of the 1.4, mine does it too and the garage has no idea what is causing it. Quote

Stuey Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 its a defiante metalic knocking noise coming from just behind the front seats. I still think it is the gear linkage hitting the exhaust/bottom of the car. The best way to recreate it in mine is 4th gear at 17-20mph. the car is silent so you can hear it clearly. I also have a tinkling noise coming from the back wheels, you can only hear this with the windows down...I have no idea what that is... Quote

Yeah sounds like my problem - does it happen when you tap the accelerator? Quote
Stuey Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 yep it does indeed, I think it knocks about 3 or 4 times and I can replicate it at anytime. It does seem to get better when the car has warmed up, first thing in a morning it will do it on most gear changes. My car really isnt a morning person, its very jerky, crashes about and sorts of things rattle and bang but as soon as I have done a mile or so normal service resumes. Quote
wozza Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 This sounds like the same thing I have had for ages as well. Anytime you touch the accelerator or tap the clutch I tried loads of things to see what recreates it. And does sound exactly the same had it into the dealers for it a few times now came out and was sorted for 2 days before it started up again. I was told it was exhaust related. Quote

Thanks for the replies Wozza / Stuey - looks like we are stuck with it for the time being. Im just hoping it doesn't do any long term damage to the car. Quote
Stuey Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 it doesnt sound serious...and citroen dont seem to be concerned that it will damage anything Quote

I think I will be trying the other Citroen Cardiff dealership - a 2nd opinion might shed some light on the problem. Quote
