2002 C5 2.2 Hdi Exclusive - Thinking Of Buying

Hi All,

First post, so bear with me ;-)

Ive been looking at a 2002 C5 2.2 HDi Exclusive with 120k miles on the clock that is being offered to me at a good price.

My father has a HDi 110 LX also '02 so I know a little bit about the foibles of the C5, but I dont know much about the HDi at high miles and the 5+ year services.

Is there anything I should be watching out for on this car/age/mileage? It has a full dealer history, drives fine, and the interior wear etc would match the quoted miles I would have said.

Ive heard rumours about suspension servicing being needed at this age, but is there major engine work coming up, or will belts etc already have been done because of miles?

All advice appreciated.

Hi Gareth,

I'm not a mechanic, but there are some users on here that are, so hopefully some of them will reply.

But I'd have thought that with a full dealer service history, everything should have been done.

The important bits would be the particulate filter and diesel additive top-up (separate tank under rear seat). In fact at 120k, your car should in theory have had these bits done twice by now. Your father's HDi 110 doesn't have these btw.

The other things would be change of suspension fluid and cambelt.

One way to check would be by contacting the dealer(s) who stamped the service book - they normally keep computerised records. I did this when I bought mine and the service manager was happy to help.

Another way would be to contact the previous owner from the V5 and ask him questions. Again, most people would be happy to help.

120k, as said i'd be looking for 2 cambelt changes first

check that rear pads are wearing square, problems with calipers twisting usually shows as squealing or binding brakes. could mean new calipers if bolts don't come out.

check everything & i mean everything electrical twice!

if it's an estate, don't worry if glass tailgate doesn't open, common problem

Also check rear suspension, if it creaks or cracks when you bounce it up or down , more than likely rear swinging arm bearing or bearings gone kaput (near side or offside, sometimes hard to tell due to noise reverberating through rear support box frame).

Fault normally confirmed by witness marks on inside outside edge of tyre due to camber caused by collapse of bearing in respective arm.

Particulate filter on these can be 50k or 75k, depending on RPN. IIRC cambelt is 100k.

I paid £144 + VAT for filter, and £77 + VAT for fluid.

PM me for a decent indy in Kent.
