coastline taxis Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Well my very first c5 died today.Bought her 3 years ago with 35000 on the clock she was only 4 and a half when i got her. Since then she went on to work doing roughly a thoushand miles a week with no time of ever. Not even a single day when she didnt go out on the road satrting at 7am and working till 2am. this car never ever broke down obviosly she had her fair share of tyres, ball joints, and droplinks, But after a severe heart attack in the automatic gearbox with a 185000 on the clock it was decided to give her early retirement and spend the rest of her days sitting in the corner of the garage. She did however sign a organ donor card so she will live on in the other 3 i have ha ha ha. Now down to buisness bought a 51 plate 1.8 petrol 1 owner full dealer service history to replace the retired one. Took it in for local taxi test and it failed on the emmision basicley they were bouncing all over the place. Brought it back to the yard and plugged the scanner in it came op with p1110 which turned out to be a air temp sensor. Phoned town center citroen for advice and was told of the workshop that it was one of 2 sensors Air intake sensor and pedal position sensor so both were replaced (against the dealers advice which was to take car to them) now when we plug the car in the code has gone but the emmisions are still high/low. So we then switched scanner to live data and noticed 2 things the o2 sensors before and after the cat are both showing lean then switching to rich then back to lean/rich/lean would/could these sensors need replacing in order to put the emissions right. Only had the car for just over a week and would have thought the emissions were fine as when i drove it back from where i bought it (Cleethorpes) It did 160 miles for £18 which gives a consumption of well into the 40s per gallon many thanks Quote
techbod Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 P1110 ?? sure its not P0110 idle air temp sensor ( IAT) sensor that would throw emissions out for the MOT Quote
coastline taxis Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 P1110 ?? sure its not P0110 idle air temp sensor ( IAT) sensor that would throw emissions out for the MOTSorry your right that was the one. we replaced that and the throttle position sensor but it is still showing rich/lean b4 and after the cat on the live data Quote
techbod Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 the fault could be wiring - IAT or ECM, since you changed the IAT that rules that out so wiring and ECM ( don't know why your not getting any fault codes for the o2 sensors though ) basically how they work in line is the rear sensor matches the first sensor and the resistance becomes equal and it throws a code and sends the ECM into rich mode ( carbon build up on the rear o2 sensor is enough to cause that ) try cleaning it and see if the code goes off, another way round it is to fit an anti Fowler plug which takes the rear o2 sensor out of range so make it hard for the system to read and a little cheat to lengthen their life, an anti fowler plug is an extention which screws into the o2 sensor port and the o2 sensor screws into it Quote

While your hear i have another c5 automatic diesel that i was going to convert over to manual would the ecu need to be altered as it would be expecting a signal from the autobox and not getting a return as it would have a manual box in it therfore putting mil on and going into limp home mode Quote
techbod Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 engine and tranny have different ECUs at least the older ones do so it wont be an issue Quote
coastline taxis Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 engine and tranny have different ECUs at least the older ones do so it wont be an issuethanks for the info might put the car back on the road then. i take it that diagnostics is your field Quote
techbod Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 thanks for the info might put the car back on the road then. i take it that diagnostics is your fieldyep^^ im also a qualified tech old school and now retired but I cant help giving help :o I've always been a Citroen fan and had many and had many problems and I love it because you only learn from problems its a case of "been there seen it and sorted it" Quote
coastline taxis Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 yep^^ im also a qualified tech old school and now retired but I cant help giving help :o I've always been a Citroen fan and had many and had many problems and I love it because you only learn from problems its a case of "been there seen it and sorted it"Do you mind if i pm you with any future problems as i now have 3 working c5 1 for spares and 2 getting sorted to go on the road. i think they are great cars and ideal for what i need them for. This is also a good site for info and the only fault i can see on it is that people dont have the common courtesy of a return psting to say "thanks that advice worked" other than that its a topper site Quote
coastline taxis Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 PM not a problem ill help where I can :oThanks very much as theres no substitute for experience Quote
kfk Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Cant help feeling that the catalytic convertor isnt doing its job. Upstream oxygen sensor should be cycling between 0.1v & 0.8v, Downstream should be a fixed value of about 0.5v Quote
coastline taxis Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 Many thanks to teckbod and dfk car now sorted and flew through the emissions test. After leaving the site last night my plan was to clean/check both 02 sensors and the cat. But before coming onto site my plan was to start with serviceing and possible injectors as scanner was showing no code faults.Anyway got the car up in the air and there was the fault the back of the cat and the rear 02 sensor lokked like they had been flattend with something (if you can imageing the exhaust lying on the ground youd think it had been hit repeatedley with a hammer). Removed the 02 sensor and it was bent removed cat and it sounded like a babys rattle replaced both and car now fine. Asked the tester at taxi bay why he hadnt mentioned it and he said "because it wasnt blowing it wasnt a failure" so once again many thanks Quote
kfk Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 glad the suggestions pointed you in the right direction Quote
