I was reading a review of the Pluriel on this website

and noticed the following...
Some of you may have spotted that the rear screen folds into the spare wheel well, thus signifying a lack of said wheel. Rather than rely on the commonplace - and usually quite useless - puncture repair aerosol, Citroen has done the right thing and fitted the Pluriel with Michelin PAX run flat tyres.
Now I know my Pluriel has a space saver spare wheel, so I went to look at the specs on the Citroen UK website and was presented with this...

Question, how many people have run flat tyres and how many have a spare wheel?

I don't have a Pluriel, but I do wonder whether there is any point in carrying a spare wheel these days. I bet most people* can't/don't/wont change them at the roadside, and will just call out a rescue organisation. Let them carry them and save our valuable boot space and fuel.

Had to use my spare wheel a few times. But if theres no spare wheel there will be one of those emergency kit thingys in its place which will do fine. or run flats.

The 206cc doesn't have a spare wheel and has the squirty aerosols but if you have to use them you have to change the tyre.........
I wasn't happy about not having a spare wheel but my wife said there is no way she'd change a wheel or even know how to do it, and I guess she's not alone.
I put an electric pump in the boot as the most likely scenario is a flat caused by a nail when you get back to the car in the car-park and a pump-up is sufficient to get to a garage or get you home.
I certainly wouldn't go without comprehensive breakdown cover; if you're over 50 like me, comprehensive european cover from Saga is £85.

Mine (04 1.6) has a space saver spare wheel. Even the Citroen salesman tried to tell me that it had run flat tyres, but a quick poke around in the boot revealed the truth. The tailgate hinge and boot false-floor seem quite high, so I think we've given up boot space in order to retain the spare wheel, rather than the other way around. Of course, we can always put the roof up and leave the plastic boot cover thingy at home if we need to use that space for luggage.

I'm not sure that any production Pluriels have ever had run flat tyres. Could it have been a feature of the prototype that never made it into production, but which didn't get removed from the press pack? A Pluriel without a spare wheel well could perhaps have been given a deeper boot, but only if the folding mechanism could have been redesigned to stow the rear screen at the greater depth, so I can't see this being a last minute change to the design.

Given that there's space for a spare wheel in the current car, why would Citroen choose not to supply one? Run flat tyres must be more expensive, aren't they? What other use could they make of that space? A bigger fuel tank perhaps, or a specially designed 15" custom picnic hamper? :-)
