ribinsons Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Hi. Today I noticed small oil leak from engine(see picture http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/Jdo...feat=directlink ). When a car is standstill during night time there isn't leak, but it appears on engine when the car has been driven for some time. All oil levels are ok. There isn't any warning lights on dashboardand I hadn't fill any oil recently as well. It's C5 1.8 LX 52reg.Does any one has some ideas? Thanks. Quote
coastline taxis Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 best way nto find oil leak is to clean the oil off the go to local food store and get a few bottles of bright yellow or green food colouring add it to your oil. then get a cup of tea (to drink) now start your engine up drink your tea and watch for the leak and with it being a bright colour youl see it straight away. we use bright pink but not marks and spencer pnk ha ha Quote
smokescreen Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Looking at the posted picture there's no need to add anything to the oil as after you've removed the top engine cover it should be patently obvious where the leak is!! Quote
ribinsons Posted June 19, 2009 Author Posted June 19, 2009 But is it something I have to act urgently or it's not so serious? Quote
smokescreen Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Worth getting it fixed soon a) before it becomes more serious, if it can. :( before it makes a mess of your engine compartment. It may something obvious but I not up to speed on Citroen petrol engine as I'm on my second diesel. Quote
ribinsons Posted June 19, 2009 Author Posted June 19, 2009 And does any one know how to remove that plastic cover? Quote
coastline taxis Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 the big black plastic bit is basicly a air box and dosnt have oil going through it to remove that is just a few 10 mm bolts to remove the plastic bit on the top that is circular with a thin back pressure pipe going into it is as follows, on the right of it youul see a hole insert a 6mm socket and slacken it as its just a jubillee clip then pull the top piece off. But again this is all the air intake side of the engine so even after youve removed it i doubt if it will be " patentley obvious" Quote
seefive Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 And does any one know how to remove that plastic cover? If you mean the silver engine cover, it's held on with 6 turnbuckle screws. Turn them hrough 90 degrees and they pop out easily. You won't see much under there - just the coil pack really butyou will get a better view of the rocker cover gasket - could be causing the trouble. Quote
ribinsons Posted June 20, 2009 Author Posted June 20, 2009 I had a look today. Removed that black cover. (First of all have to un-screw air filter and then there is a screw on a right side.) Oil comes from "breather"(as far as I remember it was called). It could be oil vapour coming from engine and it condensates in air filter tube and then leaks. That my discovery so far. Don't have any clue why it's so. But I'll have a word with a guy from a garage what he thinks. Quote

The oil breather pipe should be secured at both ends so as to be airtight, with jubilee clips or similar. Are there any kinks in it or is it blocked? Quote
coastline taxis Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 the breather pipe screws straight into the engine block and is held into the intake manifold my a fancy clip and rubber seal could be worth checking the seal Quote
