roch799 Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Have a C5 Estate 2.0 HDi LX March 04 plate. Vehicle is difficult in starting first thing in the morning. Especially when 5 degrees C and lower. It will eventually start after being turned over for approx 15 seconds. It appears to be temp related as would not start at around -11 & -9 C. Have got it going at -5 C and above the warmer it is it will start much quicker, still takes its time. Once started it can be turned off almost immediately and restarted without a problem. Once started then driven to work it will start ok at lunch time around 5 hours later or leaving for home early evening 8 hours. Used the suggestion on switching on ignition for 5 secs a number of time, little or no effect. Have had both battery and starter checked out and A OK. Replaced air,fuel filters and checked all connections. Have checked the pre-heat system which is working correctly inaccordance with haynes and postings on this site. Removed glow plugs and check and glowed within 5 secs of having a 12v put across them. Have eventually changed these but problem persists. When eventually starts it will run smoothly straight away so no evidence of misfire or one cylinder below par or excessive smoke at start-up. Once running the vehicle is smooth and responds as it always has. Any ideas would be appreciated. Quote
Randombloke Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Sounds like the there is a small air leak and fuel is draining back into the tank. Does the problem go away if you hand prime the pump before starting in the morning, if indeed there is a hand primer on the C5? (Haven't looked) I seem to remember both Coastline and iannez made suggestions about this sort of problem before. One problem was that the pump was leaking from some seals. iannez has posted that the preheat will only work well below freezing (-5C IIRC). Unlikely to be a preheat problem. DW12TED4, 2179cc, 16V, 136bhp, Bore 85.00mm, Belt, DOHC Glow Plug 01/2001 ->the glow plugs on your model have a max of 8 volts as above. Youve tested them with 12 volts so i dont think youll have a happy set of glow plugs in it.Did you test the new set the same way before putting them in. Give it a quick to see it fires straight up it if it dosnt fire straight up then i would follow randomblokes advice. Just for future reference most heater plugs dont use 12 volts anymore its normaly 4.5volts now Quote

Its and electric fuel pump gauge in the tank. It operates each time the ignition is switch on. So would have considered this to prime the system as is stated when fuel filter is changed (haynes). Checked all connects and been underneath vehicle to check them as well. No visible signs of leaks but may not be apparent if it is drawing in air. If air was being drawn in I would have thought it would be difficult to start after 5/8 hours. When igniton on, checked each feed to glow plugs between 10.6 to 11.0v. Speaking to the auto electrician when had the battery and starter checked. He said that was normal and when they start the charging system increases it up to 14v. Putting 12v across them should not hurt them as this method was suggested again in haynes. Did not test the new set as you suggested thought may have knackered the old ones. 2.0 HDi 110 RHZ DW10TAED SOHC 8V Thanks for your time Quote
