After about 3 months of irritation due to the reverse gear collar staying up after selecting reverse, the (I now realise) inevitable happened yesterday. The car was reversed back to get out of a tight gap, put into what my wife thought was 1st gear, then driven backwards into a brick wall. Fortunately really minor damage. This spurred me into a testosterone-fuelled rage later as I finally bit the bullet and got nasty with the gear knob. I finally had to wrench it off with a twist and pull up. This broke the white nylon plastic bit within the gear knob that contacts the metal of the gearstick. I just couldn't get it off by pulling straight up, maybe less damage would have resulted. Anyway, seems to be no problem, as after drenching the inside with silicone lubricant, (which I just couldn't get to the right part without getting the gear knob off), it was put back together, and it works like the day it was brand new again. The gear knob seems very secure again, as there were indented holes drilled into the sides of the top of the gearstick into which locate some bumps on the inside of the gear knob, and it does not pull off easily at all. Hope that is of help to somebody else suffering the same fault.

Many Thanks for your info - big help - inspired me to sort it out!

I had to take mine apart since the nylon section on the gear shaft itself was obviously scored and no matter how much silicon I put on it still stuck in one place. I released the wire from the collar facilitating reverse gear and removed the collar which moves up and down on the shaft. By careful sanding with wet and dry 800 grade I rubbed the nylon shaft down as well as the inside of the collar and each time wiped both free of sanding particles and then sprayed with silicon spray. I had to do this about half a dozen times not wishing to take too much off all at once. The final time the collar freed off and after putting back together now works as it should.

Total time about 20 minutes only but what a difference - no more wondering which direction you are setting off in!!

Thanks again for setting me on the path.

Glad my post helped you Gearbox, and since I did the job I've lost count of how many times I've seen it mentioned on this site that to get the gearknob off you have to just pull directly UP. Never mind, it is very secure and problem free still, some months on now.
