My Car needed a new catyitic converter so i tried several local garages in the poole (dorset) area,

i was quoted between £230 and £270 inc of fitting and guarantee,

I then went to kwik fit (fernside rd poole) and after being shown the state of my exhaust was offered two quotes,

one was for the whole exhaust system inc cat converter £570, and a second quote just for the cat itself £360,

after looking at my face (jaw dropping)he asked if i'd been quoted a lower price and he would beat it by £5,

when i told him that i'd had a quote of £230 a whole £130 pounds lower for the cat he couldn't believe it a rang up himself to confirm.

He then matched the price minus £5, but i said if he could do the whole exhaust for £350 i'd have it done here and now...to which he agreed!

Was this a good price?

Never been much of a hagler except when bartering over the household chores!!!!

if so then i highly recommend :)

I've just had an expensive day with my picaso and had 4 tyres replaced and trackig corrected. But while it was on the ramp they pointed to the hole just after the cat :( said it needs replacing urgently as it was hanging by its last legs. They said to me I was looking at over £200 to replace which is something I just couldnt even afford this month/year. So for £30 cash in hand they have wellded it for me thats the 2nd time I have had it wellded very close to the first place.

So I would say you have probably got a fairly good deal out of them .

What annoys me is why aren't Kwik-fit doing them at the lower price anyway? Thats some mark up isn't it?

I had a new rear and centre box fitted on my 2l hdi yesterday for £87.00 inc vat and fitting,I could have had the whole lot including the cat for £236.00 fitted from Carson tyres in Melksham (Wiltshire)

I have used them a couple of times now and found them very helpful and their workshop is cleaner than an operating theatre!

Aye - just because they're cheap doesn't mean they have to be scruffy. Cleanliness = organisation = efficiency = economy in my book (wish I could convince SWMBO on that...)

I get the Pic serviced by a local indy, and when we first got it, it needed a new cat which I got from the interweb at £120, and he fitted during a service for an additional £20. His premises, too, are spotless.

a good price depends on how quickly you want the work doing, im sure you can always find somewhere cheaper but it means more hassle etc, plus you have more chance of the exhause dropping off the longer you wait, i usually have a 1 hour blast on the net to find the exhaust as cheap as poss, then ring round a few garages for prices of fitting it, as its not a hard job you usually dont pay that much for the fitting

Had a finger size hole in back box where the clamp goes round; being just off on a trip I wondered if I could just patch it...... strangely enough people use bathroom silicon for sealing some motor bike exhausts to cylinder head, so I cut out a bit of fizzy drink tin and smeared it with silicon and popped it over the hole, two MOT's later it is still holding out without sign of leakage!

Hi all just a word of wisdom,

Why not have a stainless exhaust fitted, it will never rust out it will last the life of your loving pic. Also if you have to have the cat changed, you should be able to get your old cat from the garage. Why do i want my old cat back i hear you cry?? simple really, My cat went on my car in Jan this year, so i ased the local garage if i can see the cat and to have it, they said i can no probs.then i went to the scrap metal dealers and they gave me £55.00 for it, somthing to do with the metals inside the cat which makes it valuble. Better i had the money and not the garage, that paid a little for the new cat. :P ;)

didn't have that option with my new cat 'cos some basttard cut the old one off while parked at home on the drive. Worked out it was done for some-one's replacement as nobody elses car was touched.

the metal inside is platinum.

At some point in time the road surfaces will be a vaulable source of platinum ore with the deposits from 'cats'

Im sorry for your situation there Dr Bob, what is wrong with people of today. Think i shall go with a brush and sweep the local roads and take it to the scrappers and see what i will get for it!!! ;)

If you're not worried about getting your spanners out you can get really good and cheap deals from Euro Car Parts. I saved a fortune on my full exhaust supplied at well under £200 - including the cat and new rubbers etc. You could always get someone else to fit and still save massively over main dealer prices - my main dealer will fit parts bought eleswhere too.

Going to have to come up with a CAT lock rather like the cycle lock on the spare wheel.

I suppose you could have a two tabs welded on the cat and then pass a stainless rope thru them to some strong point on the car. It may not stop them from trying but it may make them think twice.

OR

There's alway connect it up to 240 V and plug it in. That will really give them something to think about.

Sounds like a good idea about the 240v, i was reading the paper the other day and the story was about rising car crime in Cape Town S, Africa. People electrify their cars and some even had flame throwers attached. brilliant idea, but i guess human rights dont exist other there. not like this country. :D :fw: :D

About a year ago I noticed some brown sticky stuff on the garage floor (where my Picasso C3 is parked) I could not see any obvious leaks from the underside, so cleaned the garage floor and everything seemed fine - or at least till now! Today the stuff was back on the floor and I have traced it to a plastic box under the car about a foot in front of the offside rear wheel. Does anyone know what this can be please?

Your eolys fluid bag is leaking.  Eolys fluid is used to clean the diesel particulate filter...it is added to the fuel in the tank automatically each time the tank is filled.  The supply of fluid is contained in a plastic bag which,  unfortunately,  is badly designed and often springs a leak,  which is what seems to have happened to yours.  Only cure is a replacement bag...do a search for more details.

Thanks Marvin

I contacted Citroen of Exeter and they had a word with Citroen UK zzzzzzzzzzz. Citroen UK offered to pay 40% towards a replacement bag. I took it in as I was going to France the same week, but was not happy at having to pay £98.36p as the car experienced this "defect" at 12000 miles, as there is obviously a manufacturing problem (which Citroen UK deny any knowledge of!). I received a call from them saying that they would give me a £250 discount if I bought a new Picasso C3. We had a lengthy conversation during which time I explained to him a few facts of life! I do not know how long it will be (probably not in my lifetime) before these manufacturers realise that it is reliability that the customer wants NOT money off for their bad design!

I was wondering how many other Picasso C3 owners there are out there who have suffered a failure of the eolys bag??(chap I spoke to at Citroen UK said it was a "common problem", yet they denied any knowledge of it!)

I have sent correspondence to Citroen (Paris) and await their response - although if they are anything like Yeomans of Exeter and Citroen UK, I will not hold my breath.

This is a car that has many problems, none of which has anything to do with design or manufacture, obviously Citroen do not expect owners to actually take them onto a road and drive them

Posted

You are probably right about the manufacturers. I doubt whether many of the staff at these firms actually drive the vehicle they sell

I would expect a vehicle with many miles on the clock to have a few "wear and tear" problems, as they are not built to last, but low mileage vehicles should not present such problems.

Still when the time comes I will not be buying another Citroen on principle - so that is Citroens loss as I will never recommend them. Code here is "look after your customers and they will look after you", having run a business I found that to be the best policy. It takes a long time to build up a good reputation but seconds to lose it !!

Look where Skoda used to be, now they are used by the Police, some testimonial.

Umm ...... See what you mean but I will not be holding my breath hoping to see Mr Plod driving a Citroen as they actually have to DRIVE their cars - although I have seen the police drive them in France  :D
