Dear Mister B

My wife gets rather lonely when I am at work and we have no children for biological reasons which cannot be remedied.

I guess we want a dog as a child substitute, but is it a good idea to have two so that they would be company for each other and what breed would you recommend?

We have a large house which is extensively carpeted, so a breed which does not drop hairs would be ideal.

I've known some dogs in my time and been sold a few pups!

I've just been accused by my kids (I say kids - 26 & 22 - both still at home!) of making the pong in the living room! But, I can assure you, that it's my mutt whose asleep on my feet!

Good guard dog but "old & smelly" - 'you sure you want one?

How about a Long-haired Chihuahua?.They don't shread hairs at all and don't smell doggified if you know what I mean .We've had two and there very lovable.I wouldn't say get two as they tend to fight for attention, our neighbour has two Jack Russells and there always at each others throats.

P.S Chihuahua's don't bark much either. :)

Firstly, Mr Hornblower, I see you have managed to slip through the good taste net with your name! Well done, young man - I like a bit of enterprise.

As to your problem, How unfortunate is your wife's biological disposition, however the idea of substituting dogs for children bears a mixture of merit and foolhardiness. Dogs may well provide the succour you both require and, as a breed, I would recommend the shaven wolfhound as these shed no hair, require little excercise and can see off unwanted guests or family predators with consumate ease.

The downside of the substitute child is schooling. Have you thought about this side of life at all yet? You will need to put your names down early for a good academy these days if you want the best for your child-dog, you know...

Does this page say 'Mr Moran's Problem Page' or 'Mr S's Problem Page'? I think not. Even though you are most welcome to enter your comments on MY page, I shall of course expect FULL RECOMPENSE, much in the mode of your Mr Livingstone's zone charging scheme. Failure to 'cough up' will result in the my loosing the shackles of my legal eagles and you wouldn't want that, would you!

Do you really want a dog which doesn't shed hair? ... your choice is limited to the likes of Poodles, Bichon Frisee or similar.

Do you want to give it plenty of exercise?

Do you leave it for long periods?

Do you want a mature dog?

Think about what you want from the dog. Choose a group by their characteristics - Hounds (noisy), Terriers (dig), Gundogs (energetic), Hearding Dogs (very intelligent and easilly bored).

If you a really serious ... try your local RSPCA or NCDL home or visit Crufts at the NEC (coming shortly) and visit the Discover Dogs section and meet all the breeds and their owners.

Good dogs to try for ... Greyhounds .. dont eat much or need a lot of exercise .. and easily available.

We have an Italian Spinone .. an Italian gundog ... large, white and drool alot!

I can tell you what not to get!

A Norwegian Elkhound! Personally I love them and have one at the moment - had the old one put to sleep last Oct :(

They bark a lot, have bags of energy and moult so much you live in 'Mohair World' most of the year - good If you like to knit fluffy jumpers though!

They don't smell much unless they roll in a decomposed fox!! I won't go into details....
