sebanelli Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 I have an '05-plate 1.6HDi that has begun emitting a high pitch whine together with a jangly sort of metallic vibration from the engine compartment. My garage has disgnosed an Alterenator pulley bearing problem and has replaced what he thought was the offending part only to find that this hasn't cured anything. He now reckons it's most likely an Air Con Compressor problem. Does this sound right? Have had no other problems with the car, just the bloody annoying noises! He's going to remove the (not needed) new part and take no payment for labour etc which is very decent of him but put me in touch with someone who deos Aircon stuff. i'm all for getting a replacement off EBay and getting it fitted. Any thoughts etc? Thanks! Quote
Lancelot Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 (edited) Doesn't sound a very good garage, more like washing machine repairers who changes every part 'till they get it right. Pleased that they didn't charge for the alternator repair as they are professionally incompetent which seems to be the trend with modern mechanics, in many garages. They are merely parts changers. In most places the skill has gone. Don't get anything off EBay 'till you find the real problem. Grumpy. Edited March 29, 2016 by Lancelot Quote
granpa Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 Go round the engine with a 'sounding rod' or long screwdriver with the handle against your ear [beware of moving parts] , you should be able to localise the noise, wonder if its the water pump, is it possible to whip the fan belt off and try the engine Quote
pjg Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 my crank shaft pulley gave the same symptoms when it started to fail. Quote

gray Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 I have a whine in my car too, but it comes from the passenger seat ! :) Ditto, crankshaft pulley. But it could also be a 'chattering' tensioner. If the A/C is switched off, does this stop it ? The clutch should be disengaged. Quote
Andym1872 Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Most probably the crank shaft pulley £40 from ecp changed it over in about 40 mins and I'm a complete novice Quote
discv Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 40 mins. would take some beating- especially if that included resetting the cam timing i.e. locking off the crank and cam position. Quote
