Lancelot Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 I have no bias for or against any religion. I find them all equally contemptible  I don't know what the fuss is all about. I just don't believe that there is anyone floating around in the clouds pulling our strings. Religion has been causing wars for a thousand years. When will everyone wake up to the truth? There is no God. Quote
Rincewind Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 I couldn't help notice the irony that then the cartoon story broke, it was on the say day that our government was trying to put through new laws on "Inciting Religeos Hatered". The idea that we have freadom of speach is not true. There are many things I could say or write that would get me arrested. We need to keep a very close eye on this government before we find ourselfs in 1984 (oh sorry we are already there. Just look at the number of CCTV cameras etc.) Religeon is a very dangerous thing. For that reason I am a member of a group called the Brights. http://www.the-brights.net/ This group promotes the concept that it is possible to have a valid morrality without referance to some supernatural being. Thanks for that, just been to the website, extremely interesting. Only two things I have ever believed in are people and nature, remember going to a humanist funeral once and the speaker said "mankind is responsible for most of the world's problems, and only mankind can solve them". Admire the Bob Geldof school of religion, don't pray for something to happen, roll your sleeves up, get stuck in and do something about it!. Saying that, we experience our share of death around the homes [one this week, sadly] and many of our ladies seem to find comfort in the knowledge that their loved ones will be waiting for them, if it helps them through, good luck to them. Most frightened lady we ever visited in her last few days in hospital was a strict catholic, and I've never seen anyone so frightened. Brought up all her life to believe that if you weren't up to scratch you went downstairs, [the only time I ever felt like telling anyone it was all a myth, but we couldn't of course.] Quote

I just don't believe that there is anyone floating around in the clouds pulling our strings. Religion has been causing wars for a thousand years. When will everyone wake up to the truth? There is no God. That about sums it up for me. During my later years at school I became interested in Humanism due to a very committed and charismatic teacher. Went to a few meetings and found a lot I could relate to. Never did follow through though. I am quite happy to follow a set of rules through life, and find worldly aspects of the "Ten Commandments" a perfectly reasonable place to start (Yes I do remember them. I was forced to go to Sunday School until finally rebelling at age 10 or so  ). I also upset my parents when I was in my teens for berating them and blaming them for having me christened as a child. What right has anybody to enrol an innocent baby into some weird religious sect? Jubilado Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 As a non-serious contribution to a serious thread, I thought that you might all like to see pictures sent by a Bavarian friend. The new, Bavarian, Pope has obviously decided that Rome should aim its recruitment at that part of the world :P Quote
RHP Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 :) :) :) at Jubilado. So now we have religion poisoning and altering the mind joined with Alcohol and Junk Food :o This particular devotees mind and memory has obviously been addled through over indulgence since I see no sign of his packet of Fags on the table :D Quote

Dan Gleebitz Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Religion is what people make it .. I would rather think of it as a belief rather than a way of life to control what you do and to make you feel guilty. I was brought up as a Catholic and some of their teachings are control by fear. I could not accept that and rebelled, but in the last few weeks I must confess to having said a few to make me / us feel better. We have the NHS but a little more is needed and it is that hope that makes us ask for help from whoever / whatever. At times like these, it's a comfort to believe and hope. Quote

I would rather think of it as a belief rather than a way of life to control what you do and to make you feel guilty. That's fine while it stays as individual belief. The problems start when this begets zealots and bigots who take it upon themselves to "educate" others  I can fully understand those who are basically agnostic or whose religious devotion has lapsed turning to religion "just in case" in times of crisis. We all seek comfort in different ways. Quote
Rincewind Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Religion is what people make it .. I would rather think of it as a belief rather than a way of life to control what you do and to make you feel guilty.Religion is what some people make it. But not what each person makes it. Some people lead, others follow. For some it's a way of life but they don't truly believe. For others it's a beliefe but they don't actually do anything related to it. To some others it's is both a way of life and a belief. But to some other people, religion is just a pile of nonsense. I can undersand why some people believe. It can be a very usefull crutch when life is hard. But that is not to say that there are people who can get buy without the crutch or even by using a different aid other than religion. I've just come back form the Glasgow Brights meating. Some very intelectual discussion. One chat tonight wants to start a campaing to give the humanist point of view more political weight. I know it's a long way off yet, but there will be a census in 2011. In that you will be asked your religion. A large number of non-christians tick the christian box just cause that was sort of their upbringing/schooling. But please, if you are not a christian or similar, don't just tick the box. Tick the other or none box instead. Only then will the secular/humanist point of view be take seriously by the government/political lobbies/spin doctors/press. If non-christians keep ticking the christian box then it doesn't give an acurate depiction of the true view point of the nation. Quote
