jeffjohn Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I have these indications of a display board electrical problem. 1. the rev meter cuts out. 2. The speedo is fairly random but responds to a thump on the top of the dash. 3. the main and dip-beam indicator lights don't come on at all. All the other displays are ok. I would assume that these items might have a common earthing point. If I am right, does anyone know where it is positioned - my french garage does not!!!!! please help, anyone! Thanks Jeff 44290 Guénouvry, France Quote

Thanks Jeff 44290 Guénouvry, France Hi There I came across this diagram on a forum the other day by chance. If you look on the second post of this : http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citro...?showtopic=5608 you might find something useful on there. Also, we had a similar problem on our Xantia. The speedo was just sat at the bottom all of the time, and would sometimes respond to a smack on the top of the dash. However it got to the point where when you were goin like 50mph, it would start reading about 100mph or above. The rev counter seemed to be ok on ours. Anyway, after stripping it out and refitting it 5 or 6 times (what a pain), I took just the speedo out of a second hand instrument panel and fitted into our instrument panel. Its worked perfect ever since. The main and dipped lights on the dash on ours had a mind of there own too. They would come on sometimes when you put the lights on, but other times they would just stay off. When we had the instrument panel out of the car, we replaced most of the bulbs to be on the safe side (Also discovering a parking brake light that we didnt even notice was missing). Is it possible that you might have knocked the rev counter out by smacking the dash, because i know that the needle on our rev counter used to jump when you hit the dash. i have seen somewhere to that if you jump a diesel incorrectly, it can knock out the rev counter, but i dont know how true this is, or if you even have a diesel car. If you decide to get a second hand instrument panel, there is one thing to be aware of. Ours is a 1994 1.9TD SX and the speedo get readings from a transducer instead of a speedo cable, which makes things easier when stripping out the car, but makes way for more electrical faults i guess. when we went to get one out of a car at a scrappy, i think the car was an L reg, and that was driven by a speedo cable so thats something to be aware of. Hope some of that is of some use to you, and good luck! If you strip out the instrument panel, its long winded, but will save you a lot of money! Just ask if you need anymore help! Quote

JeffjohnCheck all points.. I dident do that the first time and had to do it over again...My problem was: Fuel gauge, outdoor temp indicator and speedometer stopped at 70 km/h. I work at a citroen dealer Norway and this is a wery known problem at Xm and Xantia. Quote

Again - many thanks activa; I'm English, in France so I have to try to explain the problem to the chauvinistic french mechanic! Either I could get him to remove the unit and have a go, or I could risk him doing the repair! what do Citro charge for a replacement; any idea? Bound to be a fortune, I guess. Did you just reflow all the solder joints, or attempt to measure their resistance? thanks again for your support, jeffjohn France 44290. Quote
