I have an 02 plate Relay with a 2.0 hdi engine 81k on the clock. Been into the dealers 4 times recently for the same problem. The colder the outside temperature, the more difficult it is to start. If its been for instance -4c it will crank over for 30 to 40 seconds easily before firing. As soon as it fire it goes straight onto all cylinders, no black smoke, nothing. just runs perfectly. Here's what they have done at the garage first visit. "Its been on our test machine and is something to do with your after market alarm". Obviously the alarm only effect the starting problem on cold days. Second visit. £85 verdict. No fault found Third visit. After being told on the first visit by the workshop manager that there were "no glow plugs in these modern diesels" they miraculious found 4 holes to stick over £200 worth of new glow plugs into. Fourth visit. diagnosed as faulty pre heat unit, this was replaced, another £58 odd quid. This morning was a little chilly. No frost but still a little chilly. Turned key on, waited for light to go out and pump to stop, Turned key, 25 seconds of constant cranking later it started. Talks of being a frost tonight, may need a fan heater under the bonnet for an hour in the morning, like I did a couple of weeks ago. P.s. New large and expensive batteery fitted recently, it cranks over well, but I dont know how long it will be before the starter burns out Open to the floor on suggestions and remedies.
