Sticky Steering Wheel

The leather steering wheel on my 2005 C5 estate has degraded. It's lumpy and uncomforatble to hold, plus if one holds the problem area for a while one gets black marks on ones hands! Has anyone else had this problem? Did Citroen fix it? Any suggestions? The car has only done 42,000 miles.
