Thanks Dickie, is a head gasket simple to fit or am I looking at trusting a garage ?

Hi ,i'm new here and in desperate need of help. I have a 1.9zx volcane which is using a lot of water.I have had sludge in the oil although at present it looks ok.I know this can be a head gasket sign,but mine was meant to have been done last year so my questions are if its not the head gasket what could it be ? could a head gasket have gone so quickly ? and ...how much is it likely to cost me to have it repaired ? oh could it be a fracture in the cylinder head ??? sorry guys but I dont really want to give up on this car its been so good and is in such good nik apart from this problem . any help would be much appreciated thanks jan
