I'd say you want to get the head right off there, clean both the mating surfaces of all gasket remains before fitting a new gasket. The old gaskets always tend to leave a bit behind that needs scraper treatment. I suspect if you don't you'll have problems in the future. Probably ok to leave the manifolds on if you can carry the whole assembly though. Is it the alloy block with the wet liners? If so be careful removing the head and don't rotate the engine with the head off unless you secure the cylinder liners first.

Hi, don't know if anyone is using this forum. A friend of mine has a 1992 AX 950cc. We have a clunk cluck noise coming from somewhere most noticeable when bearing to the left at speed, or slowing down. Have checked the brakes in case it was a warped disk, also wheel bearings are fine. Fitted new driveshafts thinking it was a dodgy CV joint, no change still makes the noise. Thinking on it I suspect a faulty differential since the noise is almost absent when driving in a straight line or turning right. Now looking around for a cheap gearbox, I spotted some on Ebay, but not Citroen ones. People say the Ax is almost identical to the Peugeot 106, there's a few of them gearboxes available. Does anyone know if a Pug 106 box would fit the Citroen AX? Or where would be a good place to get hold of a cheap one.....trying to keep the cost down as the driveshafts were fairly pricey without improving the problem. Also the car runs well but has 160K on the clock. Any help would be appreciated.
