I had a similar problem with my 2003 1.4 HDi 70bhp, just the top red marker on Temp guage flashing, no other signs other than very low water level. Just looked behind engine with a torch and can see faint vapour rising from low behind left side of engine, is this the same location as the hose you mentioned. If so is it a possible DIY job? or alternatively how much was yours to get repaired?
