Hi, thanks. Where abouts is the immobiliser?!

Hi there. I've got a 97 R Reg Auto SX with an old style keypad immobiliser. It's recently started intermittently working; sometimes it'll accept the code, others it won't, the green light is sometimes staying on for a few days. I've spoken to a few auto electricians who all said this was a common problem but they can't touch these immobilisers! Anyone got any idea's?! I don't want to fork out the money to citroen to fix it if I don't have to! Cheers :(
