Hi guys, Hoping someone might be able to advise about this one. I have a 1.9TD Volcane ZX. I have had the dash out to change the bulbs, and now the speedo is juddering, and appears to be "sticking" ie when you stop the car, it still shows at 10mph for a while, and it is slow to react to the speed increase when you press the accelerator, and kind of "jump up and down in steps". I am not 100% sure it was working perfectly before I "fiddled" as I only just bought the car, so it could be my doing  I have read about a notorious speedo wobble on forums, and this seems to point towards the cable being at fault. Any ideas on this one? Thanks for your help, Regards, Mark

Ticking Noise & Windscreen De-mister Problem & Others
coopertron replied to coopertron's topic in Technical Section
Hi Dave, Well my local friendly mechanic quoted me approx £230 ish today for a decent valeo clutch kit, which is more than I was hoping, but about average I suppose. Car only cost £500 so I'm not sure about keeping it now. I wonder if Colin's problem is to do with a pop-up blocker or a firewall issue. Maybe the forum has stopped him posting because he's so helpful  It's a shame cos I was hoping to get Colin's slant on the other issues I've been having. Regards, Mark -
Ticking Noise & Windscreen De-mister Problem & Others

Hi Dave, That kinda confirms my fears...looking on ebay the goin rate for a clutch kit seems to be about £90. How much would the labour be do you think?. Do we know what problems Colin is having exactly?, there is a chance I might be able to help him if its to do with his PC as I work with computers.... Regards, Mark -
Thanks for that John. I think I have cross posted this in the Tech section also, so I don't know if the ops/moderators wnat to remove this post... Just out of interest, can you replace the sphere without a pit, can it be done on ramps? I assume there won't be enough clearance under the car when lowered to get to it.

Ticking Noise & Windscreen De-mister Problem & Others

Hi Guys, Well I loved my Xantia so much I went and bought another one for the missus  It is a 1998 R reg 1.9TD, with Air con. It is almost the same as mine, except its red. There are however some problems that I was hoping you guys might be able to advise me on, so here goes... 1) Ticking Noise ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The first thing that is concerning me is the ticking noise, which is occuring I would say approx every 10 seconds. It speeds up when you raise or lower the suspension, and becomes constant. I have observed in the LHM reservoir that when the tick happens, there is a little ripple in the tank. Yesterday when I was raising and lowering the car, it went down ok, and the front came back up, but it stayed down at the rear, and I had to raise it to the max again, then lower it back to normal ride height. The same thing happened on the test drive when I adjusted the height to check it was working. It does seem to go up and down ok, and once at normal height, the ride seems ok, so I am assuming the corner spheres are all ok. From what I have read on this forum, I am assuming that this might be the accumulator sphere. If this is the case, is it possible to replace this without a pit? can you do it by putting the car on ramps?. 2) Heater/Windscreen de-mister ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The second thing is the heater (I see that this in general is a pain for many owners, myself included in my previous posts). The previous owner has bypassed the slide fan speed control by wiring in a separate switch, so now it is on (full blast) or off. Does anyone know if you can buy a potentiometer or dimmer type switch that would be suitable to replace this?. I am assuming it would need to handle at least 30amps, which seems hard to come by (I found one place on the web that sold something like this, but it was in America). The main gripe though, is that when you set the directional slider to windscreen de-mister, there is practically no air coming out of the vent at windscreen, and it takes an age to demist the screen. If you adjust it to the face vents or the feet vents, there is plenty of air coming out, so the blower itself is ok. I am assuming it is to do with the diverter flap (or whatever it is called that routes the air where it is required). There does seem to be some resistance when you try and set it on the windscreen on the slider, although when adjusting it for the other settings, you can hear it moving inside the dash. I am assuming that something is blocking the flap, or the cable is snagging or something similar. How easy would this be to access, ie can I get in through the centre console with the radio out, or is it going to be a dash out job (please god noooo) 3) Clutch problem ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The clutch feels different to the one in mine, perhaps a touch heavier. However there does seem to be a fair amount of judder when you dip the clutch when coming to a stop or when changing gear generally. Is the clutch likely to be on its way out?. How much should I pay for the clutch doing on average?. With the clutch out is it easy to change that stupid little clip thing on the pedal? Thanks for your help in advance. I know I've written a bit of a novel here so apologies for that. Any help or advice on any of the points is appreciated. Regards, Mark -

Hi All I love Xantia's that much, I bought another one for the missus. This one makes a ticking noise about once ever 10 seconds. It is more frequent if you adjust the suspension. After reading the forum it appears to be the accmulator that is at fault. Is this the cause, andd are these £20? The clutch is a bit juddey, does this mean it needs replacins? Thanks for youer help. Water In Fuel Filter Light & Abs Light
coopertron replied to coopertron's topic in Technical Section
Thank you once again Mr Hunter :) With regards to the fuel filter light issue, is it normal for it to come on and off whenever it feels like it?. If water was present, wouldn't the car drive a bit "off"? Thanks again -
Hi All, Just another couple of quick questions I wanted to ask as you have all been a great help on the last two queries I had. These are the old favourite "intermittant" problems I'm afraid :) Water in fuel filter light on dash (intermittant) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since I bought the car, the Yellow "Water in fuel filter" warning light on the dash has been lighting up intermittantly. Whenever it does light up, the car drives absolutely no differently, (which I would have thought it would). Sometimes it comes on and stays on for quite a while, and then goes off again, or it will sometimes just flick on briefly and then go off again. I wondered if it perhaps might be condensation around the sensor or in the fuel filter casing or something, as surely if there was water present, the light would come on and stay on until it was all drained out?. I have read in the Haynes and the owners manual how to drain the water out, but haven't attempted this yet, as it is always raining when I plan to do it. How messy is this? - does diesel pour out of the nut you loosen, or just out of the tube? or do you have to pump it out with the primer pump?. As an aside when you change the diesel fuel filter, is that a messy job, ie does the diesel pour out?. ABS light on dash (intermittant) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The other problem I have had occasionally is the ABS light coming on and staying on when first starting the car, or once while I was driving and staying on. Normally if this happens, you can enable the ABS again by stopping the car, and turning the ignition off, leaving it a minute or so, and then starting it up again. The problem seemed to be a lot worse when we had a really cold snap, and hasn't appeared more recently in the last month or so. Is this likely to be a dodgy ABS sensor, or perhaps one gammed up with gunk?. I appreciate this is not really a diagnosable problem without plugging in a scanner but I just wondered if you guys might have had a similar problem and what you did to resolve it. Thanks for your time, Regards, Mark

Thank you Colin & Dave, you are both top men! I have another couple of questions that I would be grateful if you could answer, but I will start a new thread for that!.

Thanks for your comments guys!. Blower -------------------------------------------------------- The dash temp sensor - does anyone know how much is it to replace, and how awkward/fiddly would it be to sort (ie do I have to take all the dash out  ) LHM Level ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for your advice on this. So far as I have checked before, regardless of the ride height of the car, the disc never moves, it remains wedged at the top. Seeing as you say you can take the assembly out (I assume without disturbing anything) I will have a butchers at this at some point, but I aint gonna do jack till it stops raining :D I just wondered really if there was a guesstimate just in case I need to top the reservoir up a bit. If I was to overfill it, will it drain out through the overspill, or will it cause major problems? Thanks again!

Hi Colin - thank you for your prompt response - it is much appreciated!. Blower -------------------------------------------------------- Yes the car does have aircon/climate control - the air con snowflake button is present, however prior to me buying the car, the air con pump was replaced, as well as the aux belts, pulleys and tensioners, and the air con system was drained and never refilled/regassed, so I have never used the air con. ( I am hoping to get this sorted in the summer). As such there is the temp control on the left, from 18 - 26 degrees i think it is, and the AUTO and off and max settings for the actual blower speed on the right hand side. Having read some of the posts on the forum, it did seem to point towards this dash temp sensor. I suppose the next questions regarding that are, how much is it to replace, and how awkward/fiddly would it be to sort? LHM Level ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I have taken off the top of the LHM reservoir (I assume the filling cap) once and peered inside it, and the level was not near the top if memory serves. Is it possible to dismantle it to have a better look at the float/dome assembly?. I must admit I haven't looked at this aspect in detail, as its nearly always raining here, and I don't have a garage, plus its freezing! Thanks again! - I might have some more silly questions coming up if you can cope.....

Hi all, I have a couple of problems with my Xantia (1996 P reg 1.9TD) that I was hoping you knowledgeable guys might be able to help with if you can spare a moment. 1) Heater issues - I seem to be having a problem with the heater whereby as the engine warms up to normal operating temp, (around 80 - 90 degrees or so) the heater gets nice and toasty, really warm in fact, I can't have it blowing on my face. After about maybe 10 - 15 mins or so, the heater goes cold, and from then on, will only blow out cold air. If you put the heater setting on Red for full heat, then it does blow reasonably hot warm air out, but none of the other settings blow any warm air out. The actual speed appears to work as it is intended, ie on minimum there isn't much happening, and max it makes a racket and blows a lot of air out. Any suggestions on this? 2) Level indicator on the LHM reservoir tank - on my LHM tank, the little red disc that is meant to tell me what the level is apppears to be stuck right up at the top of the clear dome, and does not move at all, regardless of the ride height of the vehicle. Is there another way you can check or "guesstimate" the level?, also can you just bolt on a replacement level indicator from a scrappers? (and if so how much are they?) Thanks in advance for any help you can provide guys, Kind Regards, Mark
