Well the Citroen guys have had a look at it and are of the opinion it's the gearbox bearings. Now since the noise wasn't there before the new clutch was fitted they offered a possible suggestion that it may have been run without oil when the clutch had been replaced, then the fitter had an "OH S@@T" moment and put some oil in it...........can't see him owning up to that one though :( Also going off the clutch judder they reckon a cheap/remanufactured clutch has been fitted, so someone has definitely had my trousers down!

Thanks Paul. I've got the car booked in to a reputable indy Citroen garage tomorrow to sort out a rear suspension leak (strut replacement I think) so they're going to have a look at the clutch problem at the same time. When I explained the problem over the phone, the mechanic instantly said the same as you have which gives me hope of it not breaking the bank too much!

The release bearing went the other week, so I had the car recovered to my local garage whom doesn't do clutches himself but has a guy who does them for him. So a new clutch assembly later I've got the car back but it's come back with a whine on 1st,2nd and 3rd gears (they basically sound like reverse gear), but 4th and 5th are fine. Now I don't want to go back to the guy and tell him he's done a botch job if it's not actually the case, but this noise wasn't there until he worked on it. Any ideas?

Hi, not been on here for a while ever since my old C5 died on me. I've just bid on ebay and won the auction for a C5 2.0 vtr, but in my button pushing haste (there was only 13 seconds left) I mistook it for the HDI when in fact it's the petrol variant. Now on the plus side I've got it for £660 and it's a very clean looking car on a 55 plate with only 61000 miles on it and whilst I would have preferred a diesel, at least the price of petrol isn't too bad at the moment. I'm wondering whether to just sell it straight on since I'm pretty sure I wont lose on what I've paid for it, or keep it for a while and see how it goes fuel economy wise. Has anyone on here any experience of this model who could give me any advice?

I certainly wouldn't recommend this fix for rear wash...far too much risk of further problems. However in my case I thought it was a pump fault, so I went with the theory that if it is broke, a little more broke can't hurt. Window...tried new motor and that will only spin one way aswell, so it's the switch I need to replace. Might as well do the snapped door handle at the same time so anyone with spares please give me a shout. I'm driving down to France this weekend but I'm guessing their breakers parts may be incompatible due to the left/right hand drive thing?

It's pretty impossible to figure out which wire is which, don't fancy connecting up the wrong one given the notoriously temperamental nature of these cars! I'm going to replace the switch and possibly the motor aswell since there's one on ebay near me for a tenner at the moment. I might as well replace the snapped door handle at the same time whilst the door card is off......yep, I've got every classic fault in the book!! Suspension fault warning disappeared after a bsi reset, along with the airbag fault warnings (although I put that down to my clearing all my daughters toys and accumulated crap from under the front seats!) The washer problem.....disconnected the hose where it joins the bonnet, blew back down it which cleared it to a dribble of water coming through. I then pinched the end of the hose whilst operating the washer stalk and the pressure it built up suddenly cleared the blockage.

Cheers Paul. Wouldn't know how to connect it to a direct live unfortunately though. Might just get a new switch since one of the buttons on mine is loose and try that before getting a new motor. On the plus side, I've finally got around to fixing my windscreen wash whilst I was motivated to tinker about on the car today :)

Right, I've stripped off the door card and unbolted the motor assembly which is working off the switch, but only winding in one direction no matter which way I press the switch. Any ideas which part is more likely to be at fault here ie motor or switch? On the plus side I've now managed to close the window manually so I won't have to turn up at work again in the morning looking like Sir Ranulph Fiennes!!

A few weeks ago the drivers window on my C5 stopped going up on the door switch although it would go down ok and would close on the key fob. Now it's gone all the way open and refuses to budge using switch or fob. I've taken the switch unit apart and that appears to be fine and there's a click type noise when I press the switch (relay I'm assuming). Any ideas on possible things to check before I start taking the door to bits would be appreciated.

Jeez you guys are on the ball :) I'll check in the morning and follow your advice. Just googled the bsi reset and it looks to have more procedures than I had to go through to get married! Worth a go though since I used a good garage but not a Citroen main dealers for the repairs so they probably fixed the fault but wouldn't have done a tango with the Citroen computer ....which to my mind seems akin to having an argument with an ex wife!

Oh and joy of joys.....just nipped up to the shops in the car and it's displayed a "SERIOUS SUSPENSION FAULT" warning! I'm rapidly beginning to hate this car.

Thanks for the replies guys. It appears to have been the loose plastic cover that caused the oil cap to unscrew (3 of the pegs were broken!). Sod's law dictated that my alternator had fried itself in the escaped oil since I broke down the next day which left me with a garage bill of nearly £300 :( Strangely since the repair I now have a lot of wheel vibration at 70mph, wondering whether the wheels being ratchet strapped to the breakdown flatbed could have caused any damage? Also the windscreen washers are now suddenly not dispensing water even though I can hear the pump working.....could something have been dislodged during the alternator replacement?

Hi, discovered last week that my oil filler cap was missing on my 03 C5 2.0 HDI. Figured it was my oversight and got another from scrappers. Today car seemed sluggish then suddenly ok then my battery fault warning came on so went under bonnet to check connections and noticed oil everywhere (dripping onto alternator :( ) and oil cap missing again! Internet search seems to predominantly blame the plastic engine cover, which was loose to be fair, but the sluggish point earlier makes me think it's something more. Any ideas where to look would be appreciated cheers.
