I need a clutch cable - any suggestions please - becoming very difficult to change gear. Can the cable be shortened to take up slack ?

My pride and joy may have to be put off the road just for a clutch cable. gear changing is getting increasing more difficult. Has anyone a spare cable ??? the car is otherwise perfect . Runs as new. Any solutions to this problem which I'm told is common- Can the cable be shortened and does this solve the problem. Has anyone solved this? Its seems ridiculous to put a perfectly good car off the road for what seems such a basic problem. Does Citroen HQ ever involve themselves with these queries ? HELP !
