Turns out it was a thermostat or sensor that had broken off from the side of the engine

Hi, Can anybody shead some light on a problem that has developed on my 52 Reg C5 HDi. When i turned the ignition this morning it beeped 3 times and the stop light lit up and the red light remained on the temp guage. I checked the water and this was very low. I topped it up and the warning went off but a short while into my trip the same beeps and warnings came on. I checked the water level and it was down again. When i topped it up after a short while i noticed water comeing out of i pipe situatedto the right (as you look at it). Is this an overflow? Before i take it to agarage i'dlike to have an idea of what it could be. Not driving it till i'm sure as the warning will now not go away. Thanks
