  1. On the back of the needle inside the cluster is a clear plastic unit which houses the needle "motor", the back of this unit has a vertical plastic pin as part of its moulding which breaks off. You can by just the plastic backing of the unit or the complete unit online for a few pound, I bought a couple of the plastic backs and replaced both speedo (faulty unit) and rev counter (as already had cluster apart) can be repaired with a little time.

Hi Paul, I have a 2.0 HDI with twin speed single fan, it was the carbon bushes on the fan which break, they are held in place by grooves along the carbon bush rather than in a square metal tube which is more common on electric motors so easily breaks away when they get low. When the bushes break the tension spring also tends to burn away as it then touches the shaft of the motor. It is best to buy a new fan, costs around £140 but are very easy to replace, less than 1hour.
