Tyre Pressure Monitor Valves

I have an 09 plate C5 Exclusive. Recently got 'puncture' warning on front wheel. Tried to take dust cap off and vavle body burst with immediate deflation of tyre. Yesterday, same thing happened on other front wheel. Apparently failures due to corrosion. Beware - imagine consequences of valve failure at speed

I recently had similar problem on my 08 Exclusive.Got a puncture warning, but dust cap wouldn't budge.Tried various things without success, and finally managed it with a set of mole grips. Luckily I was able to pump up tyre, but was unable to budge the other caps. When it was in garage for service, they said they had been unable to check tyres because of this, and they told me that corrosion was the problem ( Ithought someone had superglued them ). I have so far done nothing about this , as I am afraid of damage , but will have to bite the bullet soon , as I can't take the risk of something happening to a tyre. I thought it was just a problem on my car due to our beautiful Winter weather, but obviously it must be something that they are prone to.

Interesting problem. I'm hoping corrosion won't be a problem for me (I live in Sydney, so no salty winter roads), but I'm still waiting for my tyre pressure monitors to be replaced. I bought a new C5 this month, but the pressures always show as "Not monitored". It seems my 19inch wheels used older monitors which are not compatible with my 2011 model. The dealer has ordered new monitors so that's all fine, but it is interesting the number of subtle changes made to the 2011 model. For example, the wing mirrors no longer dip in reverse gear - and their positions are not stored with the driver memory settings. Which is a bit disappointing.

Some of the older exclsives had locking dust caps, would you believe. Are you sure you don't need a key?

Both valves disintegrated with the lightest of touches. Came off in my hand before I could turn plastic caps. Both had been off 2 months previous when new tyres fitted

They are just ordinary black plastic dustcaps, that have also defeated the garage.I have been driving for almost fifty years, and have never come across this problem before. I've had them a bit tight before, but never impossible to budge.

I had a problem with the tyre pressure sensors on my 2008 C5 2.2 HDi Tourer. The puncture warning came up as I was travelling at speed on a busy dual-carriageway with no hard-shoulder and heavy traffic. I expected to be able to go the next 300 metres to a turn-off at a lower speed, but within a hundred metres the tyre deflated completely. I had to continue at a crawl to the junction and trashed the tyre as a result - preferable to risking stopping to change it on a high speed road! I found that the pressure sensor had disintegrated. The other wheels were little better and I had to be recovered.

The dealer changed the sensors under warranty and I notice the replacements look very different. When I queried if there was a recall I was told there was not. I asked Citroen for compensation for the tyre and have had no reply. I believe Citroen should have a recall on these sensors since they can cause a catastrophic failure. I would advise frequent checks for corrosion - unfortunately my problem coincided with heavy gritting/salting of the roads during the winter, which probably accelerated it.
