Car has developed a clucking noise when going over bumps or on uneven roads.Jacked car up and had a look one side rubber is perished where suspension arm comes down and other side has no rubber at all this car passed MOT 3 weeks ago with no advisories not sure how. Could anyone tell me is there a name for these rubbers so I can go out and buy some to replace them. Thank You Steve

Hi Steve. The rubber that you say is perished , is this the brown dome shaped bump stop , or the black convoluted suspension piston boot . If it's the suspension boot you'll have a fluid leak and this needs to be fixed ASAP ( it shouldn't have passed an MOT with this rubber burst ) . If it's the "bump stop" ( that's what it's called ) it's cheap and easy to replace ...that's the good news , the bad news is I suspect that after replacing the bump stop you'll still have the clonking noise . It's probably rear arm bearings ( which are not so easy for the DIY man with a normal tool kit to replace ) a dealer will charge around £400 to replace the bearings , a good indy will be £100 cheaper . Anyway if it's the bump stop that's missing replace that first, and if it's quiet great . If not suspect bearings.

PS: My last C5 a 2001 model , banged at the back at times and I lived with it for the 3 years I owned it ( it never affected it's MOT )They tell me the early models were more proned to noises at the rear.

Hope this helps ..

Jack.

I think they'll only be available from the Citroen dealer , I bought a new one for my previous C5 and got it at the dealer , not too expensive if I remember and it just kind of pushes in !! Hope it fixes the clonk ..let me know ..

occassionally these parts also turn up on ebay.

what you should do is register at service.citroen.com (as a motor trade professional); enter the VIN number and you can browse the parts on the car - check out the rear suspension and from the exploded diagrams you should be able to figure the part (and part number) you need.

(I imagine this particular part would be the same across all variants of the C5 but other stuff - like the spheres - do change; so better be safe)

once you have the part numbers, you can check on ebay and with dealers; personally I've had good experience buying from bollingmore ashford's for stuff that isn't available on ebay (usually ebay is cheaper if they have it, but not always, and sometimes the stuff on ebay is aftermarket as opposed to original Citroen)
