This is my first post as a new member. My wife's car is a 2008 executive model; plush interior and a great driving position. I love the generous headroom.

I don't like the high fuel consumption in urban driving. The gearing is a bit too high to drive smoothly , constantly changing down in slow traffic. That would explain only 28 mpg. At a constant 70mph it does 45mpg. About right for a 1.2 tonne car. Ignore the dash display for consumption; it is unreliable. Only way to accurately measure this is from one fill-up to the next; you know how many miles, and exactly how much fuel it has used over that distance. Do a simple division.

Had a few problems in 2011 and 2012. First was the screenwash pump. Difficult access, but managed to take it out eventually. It wasn't working because the terminals were not contacting properly, although they looked fine. Nearly ordered a replacement pump until a meter test confirmed the bad connection, so put back together with a smear of Vaseline to resist corrosion. It worked. Then there were the light fault messages on the dash. This was more difficult to sort as all the lights were working. Went round all the connections cleaning and protecting with Vaseline. The light fault messages have stopped.

It is surprising that a 2008 car should have an inherent problem with electrical connections. I wonder whether anyone else has had similar experience. After my wife was stung by Evans Halshaw last year for £450 for a 24000 mile service including MOT test (with no extras apart from new front brake pads), In 2011 Evans Halshaw charged us £40 for a 30 minute connection to their diagnostic machine. No faults identified. Last year I bought a scanner on ebay for £18 which connects fine and will identify any fault codes should they appear. I am determined to look after the basic maintenance of this car myself. I will be reading with interest other members' posts, and hopefully share good practice.
