Welshguy Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 Having had my recently engine/gearbox problems fixed, I'd like to ask anybody who has the 1.4 engine to comment on their engine and tell me what they think. I have the 1.4 and I want to know if anybody else has had the faults I have had, and wether the characteristics of my car's engine is the same as everybody else's! "Characteristics" of my engine: (Having had engine mount repaired and head gasket replaced @ 10,000miles) 1. When cold, engine is extremely lumpy, and the car can be felt to "rock" slighty when stationary. This may have something to do with my stiffer supension set-up though - I.E I feel it more than usual. 2. Engine is fairly loud, and emits noises leading me to think the engine is under considerible strain, particularly when accelerating on slipways etc. I know I not expecting any form of performance, but I'd like to think the engine is not gonna explode! Is this normal for a 1.4 engine? The engine is treated very well, with me being a smoker I have a ciggie in the morning and afternoons while the car is warming up to go to/from work. No racing either, and a lot of the car's 13,000 miles have been motorway driving. Opinions? :D Quote
ham's c4vts Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 i had the 1.4 engine in 2 ax gt's, 2 zx's and a xsara, now these engines were 8 valve, some were carb and some were injected (single and multipoint). when you got to 4000 rpm the engine became quite noisey(Boomy ?), but a few revs before and after it went away. now i know your is 16 valve but do you get the same?dont forget, its a heavy car with a small engine and you have to work it a bit to get some go out of it Quote
wozza Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 Mine causes the car to vibrate a bit at times but mines the 1.6. Mine is near enough quite until around 3000rpm and then it gets a bit more grunty sounding shourtly after it sounds more wheezy. Best way to tell is to test drive another and see if its the same. And love the never raced comment I cant say the same about mine. As soon as I left the dealers I stuck my foot down and gave it some. Best way to break in an engine drive it like you stole it. Quote
Welshguy Posted May 25, 2006 Author Posted May 25, 2006 lol well I'm not a saint but I fear it will break if driven too hard! I did get it to 115mph going over the Severn Bridge in the first week of owning it though chasing my brother's Clio. :D Which I thought was quite respectable for such a heavy car - took an age to get there though! wozza Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 Had mine up to 120 with room to go but decided that was fast enough and slowed it down again. Was 4am on my way back from scotland and my passengers were asleep. THe only problem with that centre mounted speedo they can all see it lol. Quote
Welshguy Posted May 25, 2006 Author Posted May 25, 2006 Cool  I think the point of this thread was just to get my frustrations out about the fragility of the car. It appears fine in all aspects sometimes, and other times it feels like it's gonna fall apart at the seems.....GRRR :D Quote
Stuey Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 I have the 1.4 the engine does have to work harder than most as the car weighs so much. I am not sure what you mean by rocking though mine doesnt do anything like that. someone said earlier in this thread that they liven up after 3000RPM and that is certainly true in the case of mine, not sure if it is the injectors firing more or what but it is noticable mine is quit loud when it is cold but that is normal and calms down when warmed up.. Quote
Welshguy Posted May 26, 2006 Author Posted May 26, 2006 The rocking feeling I'm talking about it when the car is stationary, say parked up or at traffic lights - with the clutch in the engine splutters...like its just between getting enough revs and stalling. It does tend to do it when the engine is cold... Quote

wozza Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Dont get it like that just a bit of vibration from the engine through the car occasionally thats all. Quote
lab44 Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 I get a sort of rumbling feeling when sat at traffic lights - like you can feel the engine. I have the 1.6 petrol. Quote
watermeade Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I have the 1.6 petrol as well, and this is what I wanted to know if anyone had the same problem on my first posting on the forum. It appears it is more widespread than I thought.Has anyone actually got it sorted with the dealership though,as mine is in tomorrow for the airbag FW upgrade and I have asked them for the 2nd time to have a look at the tick-over. Quote
lab44 Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 mines going in Tuesday to have my electric window fixed so might ask then. I suspect its just a characteristic of the engine though if we all have the same problems. Quote
Welshguy Posted June 9, 2006 Author Posted June 9, 2006 Still suffering from the problem, again particularly when the engine is cold. Im also still getting the 'grating' noise from the engine. If I dont have the stereo on and the windows open I can hear it when accelerating - its like metal grating on grating. Anybody have any idea what it could be? Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 I also have the 1.4 engine and do feel the rocking at idle, also yesterday i did hear the engine about to stall at idle also, but my engine sounds very sweet, even when accelerating very hard. Sounds alot better than the dustbin sized exhausts you see every now and then! :P Quote
Stuey Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 when you get passed about 3500RPM the enine note is quite cool, a bit wheezy but I like it!! on a niose note...leave your air con turned on when you turn the engine off and it sounds like a space ship!! very childish I know but that is about my level :P Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 i too am a fan of the noise, there is a nice (very small) tunnel (more of an overpass for trains) on the way to tunbridge wells nicely gaurded by a set of traffic lights, whenever i come across a red light, put down the window and give it some! It's no V6 or V8 ect ect but unique and nice. Quote
Welshguy Posted June 11, 2006 Author Posted June 11, 2006 On mine you can definately hear the fuel getting injected - in fact it is quite loud. Just a shame its mixed in with this annoying grating noise... Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 See if you can sort it out with the citroen guys then you can enjoy the noise uninterrupted! It seems to me that the way to go is stand strong and stick up for yourself! Luckily the guys in T.Wells are very nice, saying that though my glovebox parts are still on back order! It is wired shut! Which means i cant take the dust from the dash (duster is in the glovebox, obviously!) and cant keep choccy and drinks cold, what a time!! It would have been fine in the winter! But the guys there are great! The technicians at crawley are great, but i cannot same the same about the people at the desk! Quote
