Ben Yorkshire Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Have a 2005 VTS 2.0 Coupe, , it's jut done 12K, it has a Bad Clutch judder when setting off, or Reversing.Took it to local dealer , they said ...Yes it certainly does have a fault & we'll order parts, but made me aware should it be down to driver error( Misuse) it would be chargeable ... but this was a 'standard 'disclaimer' Took it in for the work , along with other jobs( new front Seatbelts, Faulty H/lamp Washer & Front Centre Armrest Lid Sliding back & forth) ..collected a Loan Car & was told it'd be approx 3 days. Got a call same day saying master tech had driven it & said 'Standard , it's got a Double Diaphragm Clutch as it's a performance engine , and it's OK over 1500 rpm !' My response, should you expect the car to shudder in slow bumper to bumper traffic, or when reversing, and why book me in for parts ( CLUTCH ) Fitting? They said they had tried another similar car 'off the pitch' & that was the same ! & if it gets worse or a 'big problem' to call them ! Also Centre Armrest sliding part is classed as Trim , so Not Warranty, but they soon changed their mind when I questioned them how it could have been Misused by me...so they're now doing it FOC Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 That is very interesting, my 1.4 VTR has a bad clutch judder! Obviously it is not a performance engine though! It was taken to a dealer, and the said that they could not replicate the problem! It does it with me driving, my mum, my dad, but not the tech! :D There is definetly a problem, i was driving a friend, we came to a roundabout, i pulled on, the clutch played up, i managed to cut someone up because i could not get the car to move properly! I have found that the problem can be kept at bay if; 1. You give the car very little revs and move off slowly. Not great for roundabouts! 2. You give the car high revs and feather the clutch out. Not good for "Stop Start" traffic! Really need to get this problem sorted! Could be very dangerous! Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 What a load of rubbish, you should be able to pull away smoothly. Its not like the clutch has to take much load as its hardly what I'd class as high performance. Quote
wozza Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 180bhp isnt exactly slow and the car is not high performance no but by the same token there are some people that would class the Z3 M as slow. But agree clutch should not cause problems i get some judder occasionally but i have found its only sometimes when i dont get my footing right. I can get the car into 5th gear without using the accelerator once and the judder is non exsistent. I can launch the car and its non exsistant and its usually fine day to day but occasionally it judders and i think its actually down to me. Quote
dave&trace Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 hi there we have had two C4 now a VTR+ and we now have a 2.0 litre vts both cars have had to have clutches in because the cars were juddering this was done under warranty !! Quote
Rich_Eason Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Mine juddered when I got my VTS but has now settled down. Being that it has has 10000 miles put on it by someone else who "may" have had a different style of driving e.g. heavy on the clutch, I have put it down to this. Also if it was used for town driving this would use the clutch more than a 30mile motorway commute. The judder was especially apparent when reversing up the slope in to the garage. 2000miles on and its fine and its no probs judder gone. If it comes back then it will be going back to the dealer after all clutches should last longer than a trip to the shops! :D Quote
Welshguy Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 I suffer from the judder..but only in the morning when pulling away from the house, and pulling onto the driveway at nights...I think its simply down to me not giving the car enough revs...im very light footed! Quote
Stuey Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 I think it is just general judder, eaxctly if you are co,img to a stop in fifth. Its the car telling you to give it more gas... Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 It doesnt happen to me when coming to a stop in 5th (or any high gear). Only when I set off in 1st and the change to 2nd sometimes. I have found a way round it though. Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 When the problem first occured, i also thought that the car was not getting enough gas, so when it happened, i fully released the clutch, and.... it was fine, no sign whatsoever of the car about to stall. Quote
Ben Yorkshire Posted July 19, 2006 Author Posted July 19, 2006 Ta for all the interest , in just 1 day ! Dave & Trace, as you're in Yorkshire too, where did you take yours? ...I'm Leeds area , so wouldn't mind a second opinion Ben Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 180bhp isnt exactly slow and the car is not high performance no but by the same token there are some people that would class the Z3 M as slow. I can launch the car and its non exsistant and its usually fine day to day but occasionally it judders and i think its actually down to me. I didn't say it was slow, my point was that it is not a high performance engine and should not experience any judder. Comparatively the M power engine is high performance with 100bhp per litre and 321bhp and I don't get any clutch judder with that. I do find it hard to pull away smoothly in my C4 if you don't get the revs perfect but put this down to the drive by wire. Probably just another C4 trait. Quote
wozza Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 The VTS is 90bhp litre not down that much when your thinking of it that way. 180bhp from a 2 litre isnt bad. New engine coming out next year is similar power from a 1.6 its charged though. Plenty of other cars with 180bhp from 2 litre engines that are considered performance cars Clio 182, 206 gti etc. With the clio pegging 0 - 60 in 6.4 ish usually. The engines are fairly high strung nearly 200bhp from an N/A 2 litre 4 banger is rather good to be honest. Where as the Straight 6 in the bmw obviously has higher capacity more cylinders resulting in more torque resulting in more power etc etc. And i find my C4 fairly easy to pull away in 1500 - 2000rpm pulls away fine. It'll pull away fine with no gas just depends how good your clutch control is. As i said i can get it into 5th and crusing at nearly 30 without using the gas once it just takes a little longer to get there. My usually thing to do in slow traffic is just stick it in 2nd and let the idle revs move me along slowly. Quote
Stuey Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 ive noticed that it does move under its own steam, no gas clutch up. Thought it was a bit weird that it accelerates like that. Quote
