fuelguage Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Following collection of my C4 SX 1.6 92 HDI I went on a run to Southport and back to Stockport. I was careful with the new vehicle keeping revs below 2750 and starting off with care. Before starting out from the dealer I set the trip computer to zero. On arriving home I was suprised to have achieved 85.9 mpg. I have now covered 300 miles and running to and thro arround Stockport I am currently doing 71MPG average. This latest HDI vehicle which was built July 2006 (from dated component labels) seems a fine build in every respect. I have had numerous problems with many new vehicles in the past but this Citroen build is good and much better than my past Picasso's and c5. Comments please and especially from other owners of 1.6 HDi C4 cars. Quote
wozza Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Welcome to the forums mates gonna come to the C4 meet only a couple week away in manchester only 30 minutes away form you via the ringroad. Should come along meet some other owners be better to find out what other problem we have in person if any. Getting bloody good MPG though from that engine i have to say. Not sure if we have many 92hdi owners n here though most opted for at least the 110. And the C4 build quality is rather good i know a few people on here complain but some of us have had very little problems and after comparing to a mates MK4 golf he even agrees the interior on mine is better so does my mate who owns a focus. But i guess when you get a lemon its gonna be awful. Quote
hertsnminds Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I've got the 1.6 110 HDi noticed my first hike in MPG after the 1,500 mile oil change then not much difference until about 12,000 miles. I was getting about 500 - 550 miles from a full tank with mixed motorway town driving. Now getting more like 600 - 650 miles from the same amount of fuel. Have to say the engine and gears are much smoother with some miles on the clock and the car which when new wouldn't even run in 5th gear at 30MPH will now happily drive around town in 5th. If you want to get any sort of pull from the car you have to get the turbo spinning which seems to kick in at just under 2,000 revs. Put your foot down between 1,000 and 1,500 revs and the car will do nothing for about 10 seconds. The engine seems to run out of puff over 4,500 revs and you have to be patient above that for it to reach the redline. IanBlack 55 VTR+ Quote
fuelguage Posted August 20, 2006 Author Posted August 20, 2006 Thanks for your replies and comments. I would be pleased to know more about the meeting place and dates etc.I don't think I am aslow driver but to acheive better MPG than the quoted figure by starting off progresivly and only using the brakes as a last resort. I try to keep my speed to between 65 and 70 for the best results. With the increased fuel costings mototing can cost you less if one gets better MPG by driving in a more economical way, every time the brakes are used one is wasting fuel!I was interested to read Ian's note on oil changes. I changed mine on the C5 and the Picassos. The C5 bottom cover was a swine taking 17 fixings to remove! can you tell me Ian how the bottom cover is removed and regarding the filter can you say if the new filter element is placed in to the cap first and then applied to the aluminium filter housing or is the filter element applied to the housing first.I do intend to change my oil at 3000 miles to a full synthetic. The other question I would like to ask is how on earth do you get to the air and cabin filter? Is the fuel filter a throw away type?Your comments would be appreciated.Thank you again Ian and Wozza for your commentsJack Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Mine is a 92Hdi which I chose for tax reasons being a company car. I achieve around 50mpg average. Fully synthetic oil, is that recommended? Will be a pretty expensive fillup if you use Mobil 1 Quote
C4VTRhdi Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I know this sounds daft but how can you tell the difference between a 92hdi and a 110hdi? I bought my car on the belief it was a 110hdi but on non of the documentation ie, V5, service book does it actually say. All it says is C4 vtr hdi. Any ideas? Quote
IanHur Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 The 110 HDI has a turbo the 92 HDI dose not have a turbo. Quote
IanHur Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I believe the VTR+ is only available with 110 HDI engine? Quote
lab44 Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 yup as far as i am aware the 110 is a higher spec model (VTR+) as opposed to VTR/SX so you will have climate control, automatic wipers and automatic headlights and a few other things if it is a 110 + 17" allows versus 16". Quote
fuelguage Posted August 20, 2006 Author Posted August 20, 2006 I can tell you that all the 1.6 hdi engines in the C4 have a vairable vane turbo together with a full air to air intercooler matrix. The 92 engine has a smaller turbo and can be seen by looking at the aluminium side of the unit. The 110 has a Garrett name embossed on the aluminium side of the turbo and the turbo is larger. The 110 has CPU changes otherwise all looks the same as the 92. The MPG for both units should be about the same if driven the same way.Fully sythentic oil will protect the very hot components much better than standard oil ie. The turdo shaft bearings, valve guides ect its smoke temperature is much higher than standard oil. Buy the Halfords brand when on offer @ £15 which I am told is made by Esso. Petrol and diesel Synthetic is the same, just in different cans, as informed by Mobil and BP technical. I hope this helps.RegardsJack Quote
wozza Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Meet is in pilsworth not sure if you know it. Just in Bury so small trip on the ringroad from stockport. On the 9th of September. I always thought the 90hdi engines had no intercooler like the xsara as that didnt have an intercooler. Quote
ham's c4vts Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Fully synthetic oil, is that recommended? Will be a pretty expensive fillup if you use Mobil 1 the recomended oil(in the book) is total quartz 9000 and is reasonably priced around £37 for 6 litres (5+1 :P ), filter and sumpmplug washer Quote
fuelguage Posted August 20, 2006 Author Posted August 20, 2006 Thanks for the info on Pilsworth 09/09 I will be back from Devon then I will try to make it.Yep my 92 does have a intercooler next to the radiator and condenser.RegardsJack Quote
