welshys90 Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 So i was in Citroen today and one of the mechanics was tellin me theres a supercharger kinda thing in the car that starts my car off at 110bhp and then once the car is heated up to 70 degrees it goes up to 128bhp does anyone know anything about this? or is it rubbish? bill03 Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 The 1.6Hdi has an overboost function integrated with the engine management system that provides an additional burst of torque over a short period, for overtaking or in emergency situations.Temporary torque increase of 20Nm made possible by increasing the fuel injection rate. This creates an almost 10 percent increase in torque in the three highest gears. Quote
wozza Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Load of rubbish. Look at what a supercahrger and turbo charger is they differe slightly but are basically the same thing infact some superchargers use a near enough normal turbo as part of them. Turbos just use exhaust gasses to spin the turbine where as a supercharger is belt driven as a result turbos generally are more efficient but take longer to spool up as the car needs to get to certain RPM's where as a supercharger will give immediate boost since its driven from the cambelt usually. Does depend on the type of supercharger though. Quote

Rich_Eason Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 He aint getting confused with the VW Golf 1.4 TSI engine is he? <_< 1.4 engine 167bhp with supercharger AND turbocharger? Cant think what reliablity issues this may have after 60,000miles.... Golf 1.4 TSI Quote

welshys90 Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 na am definately not gettin mixed up unless some wierdos put a c4 body kit on a porsche he was talkin about the C4 he said something in the C4 it had something 2 do with the turbo charger cos he was talkin about it suckin exhaust fumes back in i dunno what exactly its seems like something bill03 was sayin Quote
fuelguage Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 I think the HDI 110 has the over boost but not the HDI 92 unless someone knows otherwiseCheersJack Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Well, if mine has it, it must be constantly running overboost as my foot is reguarly planted on the floor. Quote
welshys90 Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 lol well its the HDI110 i have so it does have the overboost but i cant say ive ever really needed it it still boots pretty quick in first gear i havent tried it tho ill find out im goin back in tomorrow Quote
C4VTS Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 The 110 and 138 BHP engines have the overboost function. HDi 138 engineThe 2.0 HDi engine complies with the Euro IV standard and is coupled with the diesel particulate filter system (DPFS). It develops 100 kW EEC (138 bhp) at 4,000 rpm. Offering maximum torque of 320 Nm at 2,000 rpm, it also features an overboost function that raises torque temporarily to 340 Nm. This new engine is coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox already available with the C5.The HDi 138, like the HDi 110, features a second-generation injection system and a variable-geometry turbocharger. HDi 110 bhp DINThe 1.6 HDi engine is also available in a version offering output of 80 kW EEC (110 bhp) at 4,000 rpm, introduced on the Xsara Picasso in February 2004. It supplies maximum torque of 240 Nm at 1,750 rpm. Torque can be increased to 260 Nm at 1,750 rpm on the three highest gears, thanks to the overboost function. For strong bursts of acceleration, the "overboost" function kicks in, delivering up to 20 Nm of additional torque by increasing the fuel injection rate. This new engine therefore combines a fast response with a linear increase in power, and excellent acceleration at low engine speeds. The HDi 110 features a second-generation injection system delivering injection pressure of 1,650 bars, controlled by piezoelectric-type injectors. A variable-geometry turbocharger enhances driving pleasure and performance. HDi 92 bhp DINThe new 1.6. HDi 16V engine develops 66 kW EEC (92 bhp DIN) at 4,000 rpm and torque of 215 Nm at 1,750 rpm. Based on the HDi 110, this "all-aluminium" engine is making its debut in the Citroën range. With low fuel consumption (4.7 l/100 km over a standard combined cycle) and CO2 emissions of just 125 g/km, this engine satisfies the Euro IV standard. Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 .....three highest gears... Makes it sound like a mountain bike with 21 gears Quote
fuelguage Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 C4VTS has given us an excellent run down on the current HDI engine line up but what about the very new 2.2 HDI 16v turbo with twin balance shafts gear driven from the crank this must be the star from PSA.Jack Quote
C4VTS Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 what about the very new 2.2 HDI 16v turbo with twin balance shafts gear driven from the crank this must be the star from PSA. I think that is only fitted on the C5  Probably too new to get any technical information about it ? :P Not mentioned on the Citroen site <_< Quote
wozza Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 The new C5 HDI is a twin turbo producing 170bhp. Both of which are different sizes so the small one is almost instantly on boost and producing power then as you get further up the rev range and it runs out of puff the other one takes over. Looks like quite a capable engine and should produce some very healthy power after a little fettling remap alone could take it into the 220 - 230bhp+ mark and have rather large amounts of torque.
