fuelguage Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Removing passengers from the rear seats of 3 door cars can be difficult in the event of an accident. This is why I always buy 5 door cars, access to passengers is better. Quote
pork_pie Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Of course 3 door cars are safe. Otherwise they would never have been allowed to go on sale. Quote
fuelguage Posted August 27, 2006 Author Posted August 27, 2006 Of course 3 door cars are safe. Otherwise they would never have been allowed to go on sale. It is an issue worth thinking about when purchasing a vehicle. I presume you own a 3 door hatch! Quote
pork_pie Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Nah I drive a 5 door car - I used to drive 3 door cars when I was younger. 3 door cars are not penalised against its equivalent 5 door counterpart are they? Both are as safe as each other. Some people just don't have the need for 5 doors. To some people 3 doors might be impractical and don't have to worry about lugging passengers about. Choice of doors mainly down to personal preference and circumstances. Quote
C4VTS Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 As the fire brigade would use pneumatic cutting equipment on any seriously damaged car to release pasengers, I don't think a 3 door car is any less of a problem than a 5 door. Quote
wozza Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 In a serious accident doors an quite often rendered usless due to the way they crunch or locks malfunctioning. Either way it usually requires cutting so the 3 door is no different and in a bad accident most people cant move anyway and your not supposed to move them. Quote
billynibbles Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 I should imagine that there's also a case to be made for a 3-door body shell having more integral strength in the first place. The makers of some 5-door hatches I've had in the past have advised against jacking the car with the doors open in case it twists what's left of the body shell. Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Both cars are Euro N-cap 5-Star! The doors should hold up pretty well in an accident, because they are part of the strong structure rather than the crumple zone.In my accident, the door, although caved in, remanied perfectly useable, i had to get in and out for details etc.Anyone saw the "Top Gear" episode when they showed crash tested cars? In the safer cars the doors remained pretty much sound, whilst in the less safe cars, the doors crumpled and therefore offered no structural strenght. Quote

An Interesting debate, I can't live with the 3 door as I find it difficult to place and remove items from the back seat, being older 5 door cars are my cup of tea. A further point to mention is that rear doors on the C4 5 door have crash bars fitted within the door as do the front. I am not sure whether there is any protection in the cavity on a 3 door rear quarter.Yes the fire service can use a cutter on a 3 door rear quarter but it all takes vital time. The 5 door C5 has to be the safest!! :P :D  Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 I think that if the rear quarter on the 3-door did not have any crash bars (or something to the same effect) then they would not recieve the same crash test rating. They are built on the same basis, hence the design award! :D (amongst many other awards :P  ) Quote

Ciaran2903 Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 The boot seems to be large in my opinion, get two sets of golf clubs easy peesy! :P with room to spare! (but you do have to take out the drivers (the golf clubs that is! :P :D) I find it rather easy to get items in the rear seats, but the seats do roll back on the casters wich can be annoying. The looks far exceed the (minor) impracticalities! Quote
wozza Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Im with ciaran 3 door is easy enough to get people in the back if my dad who has a bad back can get in an out and my grandfather who is in his 70's can i see no problem lol. Quote
pork_pie Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 What about crash protection for the golf clubs?:P Quote

Ciaran2903 Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 What about crash protection for the golf clubs?:D You will be lucky if they fit in the boot :P :D I get them in the boot, piece of piss, as i said, take the driver out of both bags, put the bags in (one on top of each other) then place the drivers on the top, and there is still loads of room, shoes, clothes, hats, etc etc including my emergency bag and triangle. I bet fuel gague could even squash a dead body in their! :P Quote
