Rich_Eason Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Last week someone broke into my garage and had a good 'ol snoop about. Bugger all in there to nick (or got nicked) just a bucket of car washing shampoo and waxes, 3000 spiders and associated webs, and the VTS. Went out and bought and fitted an alarm to the garage and nice chunky shiny new £30 lock plus additional door security. Being that yesterday was the first day I didnt drive to work since the snoop about, I walked home to find that someone again had had a go at the garage. The door had been pulled out but not open or got in, alarm had gone off... VTS fine. So apart from the additional security devices and to the garage and the car, I've put the wheels on full lock left it in reverse (so it cant be physically dragged out). What more can I do than bolt it to the concrete floor?! Without meaning to sound like a complete nugget, its not an area known for crime, but have now got the feeling that we are being watched for the car. Other than the forementioned bucket there is 'out all else in the Garage! What a great feeling it is to know you are being watched.... Quote
Mike5483 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Our garage kept hetting broken into. We have an 'up and over' door, and what we did was this... The sheet metal outside of the door is fixed to a metal frame which is on the inside of the garage. A 1/2'' hole was drilled through the frame at the bottom and into the concrete base. A length of 1/2'' steel bar was then bent to form a 90 degree bend. The bend was put a quarter of the way along the bar, so 3/4 go through the frame and into the concrete base. You just pull it out when you want to open the door, then when you close it again, just drop it back in the hole. The garage hasnt been broken into since, although occasionally someone has ago. Quote
Rich_Eason Posted October 5, 2006 Author Posted October 5, 2006 Sounds a good idea....I've already fitted hefty bolts to the door into concrete and locks to the corner of the door to prevent it being opened by levering up the corner. I'm just about to concrete the approaches to the driveway and thinking about the large drop in posts you can get. Just a flipping pain everytime I take the car out I have to take out the post. Quote
wozza Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Not to scare you or anything but if they really want the VTS they will come in the house for the keys. heard a few things where people have been threatened even to the point of guns being pulled to get the keys from them. They will just come through the front door or the backdoor. Happened to a few Civic Type R owners and a Couple Clio182 owners. Was a few people that posted on various car forums warning of this after it happened to them. So best bet contact the police and tell them its been happening they may step up patrols round your area for a bit. Quote
Rich_Eason Posted October 5, 2006 Author Posted October 5, 2006 It dont scare me Wozza if they want it they can have it, afterall thats what the insurance is for...but I rather they didnt! The gf will be heartbroken for a start.... If whoever does get in the house I wouldnt be too worried as I'm sure they will trip over the girlfriends handbags and shoes that left everywhere, and if that dont get them the washing basket is always left where you dont expect it and trip over that! When me moved into the house I found an old rusty Scythe in the deepest depths of the garden - that would come tight with a nice applied swing i'd imagine. I might be shot in the process but at least I gave it a go. They certainly wont find the keys I can assure you......They are well and truly hidden. Quote
sammys hdi vts Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I would like to know how a thief would get on with trying to nick a VTS. Laminated glass, few locks to pick, no mechanical lock to lift with a coathanger, bonnet is protected with that flap on the passenger side so they cant get to the ecu, wheel lock and electronic ignition/imobiliser mean its a bitch to steal. Why not just take another car! I'm lucky enough to have bought a citroen package with the car so if its written off or permanently stolen citroen will make up the difference between the insurnce payout and the value of a new VTS. So hope its nicked on the last day of the 3 year package! (sort of). Have a look at these to ease your mind! http://www.carpages.co.uk/citroen/citroen-...ck-29-06-05.asphttp://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/secur...wards-2006.html Quote
welshys90 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 the area i live in is really quite dodgy and my car sits in a drive with no gates (currently under making) and its not touched, yet i had it in at my aunts when i went on holiday and they put it in their big garage and it was nearly pinched from there but they keep all the car keys in the toilet.. it has no windows and theres only one door in so the theif ventured into the house to get the keys and found the keys in the toilet but due to their alarm system once a door is open and closed after the alarm has been set off theres a dead lock that locks the door it can only be opened after you reset the alarm in that area, done by my uncles laptop so he was a tad unlucky, however he was apparantly found with the C4 keys in his pockets... i woulda went for the porsche in the garage maybe thats just me tho Quote
wozza Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 If there professionals it wont matter what systems the C4 has if they want it they will ahve it just stick it on a loader or something it only takes a couple minutes to drag it on to one. Windows can still be smashed through then just a case of getting in and snapping the steering lock on the wheel which doesnt take much effort. and have it pulled up on a loader. But as i said now they just dont care they will just come into your house and steal the keys. And chances are someone pulls a gun or similar on you your not gonna risk getting shot. Unlike the movies its rather easy to die from a single gun shot to the body. Quote
ham's c4vts Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 if you are that worried then get a post infront of garage door, get the missus to lock you in and sleep there Quote
Rich_Eason Posted October 6, 2006 Author Posted October 6, 2006 As I said before I am concreting the approaching driveway next week and have invested in a post to cast infront of the garage door. I have seen/heard of cars being dragged onto the back of low loaders before, which is why i've left the wheels on full lock, if they get in and snap the steering lock not much point, but its a deterent at the end of the day and will take them longer to steal. Welshguy Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 With the addition of a post I seriously doubt anybody other than kids (I.E not professionals) would go through the effort of trying to get through all that security - just make sure you dont leave the keys about and you are sorted. Bit of a pain with the post and that but unfortunately thats the world we live in today. :D Quote
Rich_Eason Posted October 6, 2006 Author Posted October 6, 2006 I bet even when I do cast the post in the concrete the little shits will walk all over the wet concrete...... Quote
hertsnminds Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Not sure how much you want to spend on security but you could go for a self activating security light and a cheap wireless webcam then you get a picture and some evidence. Are there any groups of kids that hang about in your area, just takes a couple of ciders for them to start daring each other to do daft things "just for fun" and they never get charged for any offence as they are classed as minors. IanBlack 55 VTR+ Yes the oiks come from miles around and congregate about five roads down around a post box?! :D :D Kids are wierd these days I cant imagine how much fun that would be, infact I think I'd get so excited about "hanging out at the PO box" I'd wet myself. :D At bed time they all walk up the back lanes back to their homes. I have seen them a number of times at night meandering back up the lane. Cant be sure its them though..... They are probably immune to Cider at that point in their life and are on to tougher things. I have some old Creosote and Antifreeze that they can have..... Creosote Chasers......mmmmmmmmmmm :D :D :P Quote
Stuey Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 I have a furry imobiliser in mine...I call him Dante and he quite likes Pedigree Chum and chocolate...want to borrow it?? :D A 30KG German Shepherd puts of twocers quite well I find...not to put the fear on, if someone is after the car is will be stolen to order rather than a joyride special. I think that is clifford that have an alarm that sends a text message to your phone when the alarm is activated...I keep thinking about that one so I can take "HItty" the bat and introduce the twocers to him Quote
Welshguy Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Grrr dont get me started on Chav's..... :D Quote

I'd imagine that would hurt point first. :D Just had a thought....I could put the Mother-in-law in the garage with the car. She could then talk AT them for hours on end and give themselves up to the bill to get away from her :D That would be better and cheaper than installing a Clifford Alarm! Dont do German Shepherds I'm affraid, One ruined my brand spanking new T-shirt at the weekend jumping up and putting his claws through it....I'll be keeping the t-shirt for when the "torn t-shirt" look comes round again....or not :D What pee's me off even more is our nextdoor neighbours are so flipping beaky that they'd know the measurements of our clothes on the washing line if you'd ask them but they didnt see a bloody thing. Their watching you now.... :D Quote
Stuey Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 "hitty" is a pedigree cricket bat... I do like the mother-in-law idea though I think that could work. Quote
Rich_Eason Posted October 6, 2006 Author Posted October 6, 2006 Not only is it a cheap effective and reliable security measure, it also ensures that she is locked out of the way and off the road! (which is a good thing!) Quote
Stuey Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 I reckon leave your car at work or something and put the mother in law in the garage with her car, set up a video camera and leave the garage door slightly open and watch the comedy!! Quote
