As a guess, it might be low on refrigerant. These ECU's often perform a number of monitoring calculations and if any come back as errant,it will take remedial action. Sometimes this remedial action is as drastic as refusing to allow the system to continue to operate.

However, the best route you should try and follow is to get a proper diagnostic test done on the relevant system.

Another possible option you might want to consider is taking the car to an A/C service centre. The will drain out the old refrigerant (and oil) by vacuum pump and check to see if the system has any leaks (as evidenced by the vacuum dropping). It would be pointless and irresponsible to try and refill a leaking system so this test is inherent and should be strictly adhered to.

If they report your system is leaking, you have your diagnosis. If it isn't, they will refill with the required amount of refrigerant and lubricating oil and all should be well for the immediate future.

Bare in mind, the system will naturally leak a small amount over time (hence why it's worth getting the A/C serviced at least every two years). If the A/C isn't used for a certain time (monthly is recommended) the seals can begin to dry from lack of lubricant, increasing the risk of leakage.
