jon wood Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 My 2004 Berlingo Multispace 2.0HDI has developed an intermittent Clunk coming from the suspension area from time to time, but its hard to trace the location or get it to reproduce the clunk. It mainly happens when the car changes direction from one to the other. I.e. going left then going right straight away.Any one had a similar problem? Thanks Jon Quote
Terry1100 Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Jon, Yup, my 1.6 petrol Desire does this. I believe it's from the off-side somewhere ands happens most often when we drive off our driveway which involves a "downhill right turn". Could it be a road spring rotating ? The Blingo has just had it's first (1000 mile) service/check which did not identify a problem. I had already grabbed all the steering links etc to check for play. If you find a specific cause, do post it here (as I will) Quote
Oxymoron Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Hi, I get this problem when it has been raining or the car is wet!....but it's generally ok when dry! Cheerz. Quote
Jazzy Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Hi, mine does it too, but usually on a downhill left turn, and only in colder weather. Quote
clanixion Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 Be careful ! I have a 2.0 HDI and it turned out that my clunk was a broken engine mounting. Take it back and bitch like hell. Quote
pork_pie Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 My previous Xsara Hdi 110 did this when ever I did full lock on. It was a broken spring which is covered under warranty but as part of the deal replaced both of them. Quote
Albert Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 The Piccasso has had a problem with bottom ball joints on the front suspension wearing out very quickly and being replaced under warranty. As the suspension is the same, it maybe worth getting it checked out. My 2002 Series 1 HDi has clunked from 3000 miles, and has now done 36500 and the wheels haven't come off the wagon yet! Seriously, I checked the ball joints at 33000 by disconnecting them from the hubs and having a wiggle. I could find no play at all but must admit the joints did feel slacker than I would expect. Doncha just love Citroens :P Quote
Terry1100 Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 We mentioned this when ours had it's 1500 mile check. I grabbed all the joints and stuff and found nothing obviously loose. I'm not too concened at thsi point but we will keep an eye (or ear) on it - if anyone comes up with anything specific/definite it will help. and yes, our Picasso did it as well. Quote
Nick_nnname Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 This is the first time I've been able to access this site for months? Also seem to have lost my previous log-in? Noticed a post "What happened to the website" so guess that'll explain what happened. We have had the problem of clunking suspension with my 2004 1.6 virtually since the day we got it (may 2004). As with other owners it is more apparent when its cold or wet, and happens mainly when turning sharply. The dealer has heard it, and attempted a cure. They re-seated the front nearside spring and the problem did seem to lessen, for a while. I've had a look at the suspension myself and, apart from the ball joint, every other joint appears to be rubber so no reason why it should clunk. From personal experience I know that worn ball joints are usually signified by a clunk when going over a bump in the road so I don't think this is the culprit. Plus its unlikely to be the ball joint when a new car's still brand new. I reckon it's probably just a design flaw. Under a certain geometry and load something 'adjusts' possibly the spring. The other unusual noise we have had was a tapping from the engine at tickover. This was diagnosed as the fuel injection. I think it's the valve that bleeds excess pressure / fuel back to the tank, which would explain why it's only apparent at tickover when little fuel is being used. Quote
StephenM Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 Mine does it and has done occasionally since new. Checked out by dealer who says its OK, at 38k the wheels and suspension are still attached to the car so it must be fine. Quote

Oxymoron Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 Hi,My suspension doesn't seem to clunk as much lately....But the engine does sound like a tin of nails at idle! :D Cheerz. :) Quote
DaveWeller Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 I have just replaced the o/s front spring, because of a noise and stiff steering, so look up from the road wheel and check that the spring is sitting centrally on its top mounting. (they sell many springs for berlingo's and are available from motor factors.)Terry thanks for showing this site on the x9 site.Hello to allDave WellerChatham Quote
Terry1100 Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 I think we previously identified that this was also a Picasso issue. Interestingly, I received a recall notice for my Picasso (sold 2 years ago - top database at CUK !) to fit a "cup" to the front springs. When I called the dealer about it he said that it was a massive recall and included Berlingo's as well - but following a VIN check, not mine. I might try lifting the front and simply rotating the spring while the weight's off to see if that makes a difference. Quote
Terry1100 Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Just to bring this Blingo (all Citroens) "feature" back to the front. Following an accident (which didn't look too bad cosmetically but as the impact was taken on the O/S/F wheel neccessitated an awful lot of steeering suspension replacement), we've just got our Blingo back. I've bought it on the long commute to Kent today to make sure all was well at motorway speeds and (it's almost comforting to say) on a left turn that "loads" the o/s/f (off a roundabout for example), there's the "Blingo clunk". And that's on a car which has just had a comprehensive geometry check, laser alignment and all that malarkey. "they all do that sir" Quote
Oxymoron Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Hi,Must be the weather!...Mine has started clunking again in the past week, but hasn't for the rest of the year! :o Cheerz. :D Quote
