welshys90 Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 So im looking for a new car but im also keeping my C4, i want something rather idiotic for a not bad price i have roughly £35k for a car (due to a death in the family) and am not sure what to put it on for the best for my money any ideas? i was thinking a second hand sagaris but not sure what do you think? wozza Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 C5 Z06 corvette. It looks great, it handles well and its quick. sub 4seconds 0-60 and tops 180mph. Spend a couple grand on the engine will top 200mph and drop to low 3 second 0-60 quarter mile in the 11 second mark. Car can be found for under £20k as well. £8000 worth of mods will upgrade everything suspension, brakes, power and basically give you a car thats as capable as most supercars. And you would still have money left over after insuring it. TVR's are nice but not particularly reliable and build quality is fairly shocking. Another car to consider an EXIGE, VXR220. If you want a very capable performance car though the corvette is one of the hardest to beat and it makes an amazing noise as well. Couple maserati's in that budget as well. Or could buy yourself something like a westfield, caterham, R1 Striker. Quote
welshys90 Posted October 26, 2006 Author Posted October 26, 2006 well i actually planned ahead and its £35k worth of car insurance has already been taken out of that budget as well as a couple of other things but ive had a little talk to my dad while watchin top gear and after top gear (old episode) ive decided that im gonna go for an ariel atom XD Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Not the best way to get a new car! :D But i hope you enjoy it all the same! Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Presumably you are not too worried about depreciation as you are going to get buggered on a Sagaris and an Atom. There are a couple of atoms on Pistonheads.com at the moment, one of which has the blower. Not sure what I'd spend £35k on, probably wouldn't, I'd rather spend the money on something stupidly quick and much cheaper and that would hold its value and then put the rest in a high interest account. Have you ever driven a quick rwd car on the road? Not sure the Atom is ideal to start with plus they are fooking freezing. If you want a daft car go for the Lotus 340R which you are slightly less likely to kill yourself in. Either way, enjoy Quote
wozza Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 See the atom is a great car....in a nicer country or if you plan to attend a lot of track days. If so get yourself some track insurance and some proper tuition. Theres a guy round here with one and the reason he cant get it out much is the weather just is not nice enough to drive. Your not likely to get to drive it much outside of summer. Seems like a lot of money to spend on a car you wont get as much use out of as you would probably want. Unless you enjoy shrinkage. Or you can get a cheaper car and put some money into your own house or something which is probably a better idea as you could ge a good fun little car and still have some left for a semi decent deposit on a house. Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I agree. Invest the majority of the money and buy a fun cheaper car. I can recommend Westfields as a good car to start with for rwd experience. Quote
Stuey Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Caterham R400 I think it is called would be good, it got the fastest time round the EVO test track. Also a M3 CSL should be high up the list too and you can drive it in the snow without your nose falling off. Quote
welshys90 Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 ryte well as for the investment point of view ive opened a isa with some money in it and im lookin at some flats, i thought about putting it all into a high interest bank account but thought as im young i may as well do it while i still have chance i.e. no kids and no wife to worry about, as for car prices to be honest theres not much i can afford (was looking at a 550 maranello today) and thats after money into the isa but i think a flat would be better for my money, id rather not have a motorbike of some sort because i feel id kill myself, as for the RWD car question ive drove a RWD porsche 3 or 4 times once to carlisle (about 90 miles from here) Quote
wozza Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Still say get a C5 vette. http://www.wallpaper.net.au/wallpaper/automotive/Chev%20Corvette%20C5%20-%20800x600.jpg They just look so good. And after a few grand in mods are very capable. Standard suspension is rather good but getting rid of the leaf springs and going to a coil over setup creates a very good handling machine. With bags of torque and power. That can also be upgraded very easily. Couple companies specifically offer bolt on superchargers you can fit in a day with a mate using basic tools and will take the power over the 500bhp mark. Plus the cars can be picked up for less than £20k. Quote
wozza Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Changed it now. It did work then it died. Basically just a picture of a C5 Vette anyway. Think there great looking cars and if you get a 2002 onwards the HUD is a cool feature. Although think a caterham or something similar is probably better especially if your gonna keep the C4. If you get something thats comfortable you will want to drive it more than the C4. You get used to the extra power and dont want to give it up. Quote
welshys90 Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 ill find one and test drive it, i tested 2 ferrari's today and a lamborghini they really werent wantin to part with the cars for a test drive but i gave them a little encouragement and i got the cars 2 test mind you if you had a rather scruffy 17 year old walk up and ask 2 test drive your ferrari's/lamborghinis would you say yes? Quote
Stuey Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 damn that 'Vette is ugly!! Get a mustang GT500... Quote
welshys90 Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 id prefer not 2 have an american muscle car i want something thats light and idiotically stupid or something that makes people wow! i.e. a ferrari or ariel atom, and if it was pouring with rain and force ten hurricanes id still drive an atom just with a jacket a fleece glooves and waterproof trousers lol Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 and if it was pouring with rain and force ten hurricanes id still drive an atom just with a jacket a fleece glooves and waterproof trousers lol That is, if the Ariel Atom was still on the ground!! <_< Quote
Ciaran2903 Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 If you are looking for something stupidly crazy, then why not think about a Radical? <_< I mean, you wont be able to even think about getting over speed bumps........ Quote
wozza Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 The convertible vette is uglier than the coupe. But the decent coupe pic i found did not work. What lambo, ferrari's were you looking at? And have you checked insurance as putting you on something like that is going to be mental. And you will have to get your own insurance remember you wont get any NCB on a 2nd car either. And if your only young might find a lot of companies will just flat out refuse to even consider insuring you. Many companies wont consider higher powered cars till your over 25. They just refuse before that some will even tell you 30. Reason i said vette or stang etc is, there cheap to maintain, cheap to run, cheap to work on. Ferrari on the other hand you have to take running costs into mind there not the most reliable cars generally either. Buying the car isnt the hard bit. Keeping it on the road is. An aerial would be good but its just how often would you get to drive it outside of the summer? Not the kind of car you can really take out in the rain. Might be able to pick up an older 911 also, or a viper, noble m12, Marcos Mantis <_< love the mantis. there are loads of nice performance cars for the money just a case of finding which you like the most and which is more suitable to the british weather and when your gonna drive it. I know id just be upset having an atom i could barely drive because of weather. Quote
moggy Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 any 2nd hand TVR's would be great and idiotically mental. i love TVR's especially the sagaris. Quote
welshys90 Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 yeah well moggy i was thinkin about a TVR i could afford a brand new one but i was only thinkin about spendin 35k if it was something like a tvr, and i know about insurance but ive got about 15k 2 play with for insurance so im not totally bothered, the ferrari's i looked at today was a 575M (maranello for people that dont do numbers) which was £60k and a F-430 which was £150k and i looked at a Diablo for £90k and test drove the Murcilago which was £160k, i thought about a porsche but i dunno it seems to get less sensible and a tad more common nowadays, i may just put it away for a bad day or something and gain some interest. Quote
C4VTS Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 any 2nd hand TVR's would be great and idiotically mental. i love TVR's especially the sagaris. I would not buy any TVR due to all the bits that fall off them even when new. Servicing costs of £1000 are not unusual either. Quote
welshys90 Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 hahaha considering what im payin for a VTR+ i dont think changin to a VTS will help me and also with any high powered supercar ur kinda expected to fork out after an accident, however today was really wierd arriving in a citroen and looking at actual affordable supercars at 17 was wierd Quote
wozza Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 If you have £190k type budgets in reality screw what i said...buy a Zonda. Quote
Mike5483 Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Do the job properly and get an AC Cobra!!! Loads of different engines to choose from in the replicas, so you will find one to be insured on, and you still get those looks. Quote
