Hi,

My C4 has started to make an intermittent grinding scratching noise...

It doesn't seem to be related to changing gear, braking or accelerating.
Yesterday it was makig the noise while I had the engine on, idling in neutral witht he parking brake on.

The noise only lasts a few seconds each time and then goes away. If anyone has ever heard a computer hard drive on it's last legs, it sounds almost identical to that excpet louder.

So something rotary...a pump maybe? Any ideas before I book it in?

Thanks very much.

If you could get the car to make the noise again and whilst it is making the noise put your foot full on the clutch. If the noise stops then it is at least the clutch release bearing.

Whilst it is making the noise turn on the air conditioning and see if the noise stops (or gets worse), that would at least tell you that it is something driven b the fan belt.

How long does the noise last ?, does it do it hot or cold ?, does it do it every time you start  ?

If you are talking abolut a screeching noise immediately after you let go of the key on start up, then it is your starter motor which has a fault.
