supermapman Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Does anyone use a TomTom or similar on the VTS+. I have heard that the athermic screen can block the signal if you don't have an ouside aerial? Quote
wozza Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 It takes a little longer to get a signal but it does work. Quote
ham's c4vts Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Ive got a tomtom one v1 and have had no problems with it stuck to the windscreen and welcome to the forums supermapman. Quote
sammys hdi vts Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I have been using a navman 530i for 6 months with no probs yet, it sometimes takes a while for it to get signal but after that its fine Quote
C4VTS Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I use TomTom on my phone and PDA with a seperate bluetooth GPS receiver that works very well in the glovebox door pocket, but it won't work near the windscreen properly. I have tried my old Road Angel on the windscreen but it does not get a signal at all. Quote
cyberandy Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 i use a tom-tom 910 the signal is weak but just about works o.k. if you do have signal problems you can buy an external antenna for around £20 on ebay i think this can be fitted on the black mesh area by the rear view mirror. Quote
lee_marshuk Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I couldn't get a signal on my InfoRad, nor can I get any signal on the TomTom whatsoever, and I spent many an hour trying. Waiting for Stuey the ever diggy dig dig dig to ask why I was doing this when I have SatNav built in and am I stupid. No, but it was a test Toad wanted me to do before they replaced the InfoRad under warranty (seperate issue). The only kind of signal I've ever got to work is the M6 Toll Tag, which does work in the designated panel part of the windscreen. Quote

The same area of windscreen near the rear view mirror also works with an external GPS antenna, so if you had one for your TomTom you can fix it there with double sided tape pad thingy. Quote
Guest CE05LDB Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 My C3 has a heated windscreen and my sat nav takes a while to find the signal. My speed dector I used to have in the middle of my dashboard but I have it now close to the bottom of the windscreen where the vents are for the windscreen it works better there. I should imagin the C4 heated screeen is the same as my C3 Exclusive. Quote
Safety Engineer Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Have a Garmin Nuvi 310 with the SIRF III chipset and it gets lock and hold the signal fine, I've had 15ft accuracy from it before (which is about as good as you'll get on a civilian set up). Quote
Rich_Eason Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 .. in the designated panel part of the windscreen. Is that the area in the shaded bit by the rear view mirror? Quote
Welshguy Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 I use a Tom Tom 300 with no problems :P Quote
hertsnminds Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 My Garmin eMap has problems getting a lock near the windscreen. Seems to get better reception near an open passenger side window. But after the initial lock it is OK. Looking to replace it with a Nuvi 610T so good to know the Nuvi's get a fast lock :P IanBlack 55 VTR+ Quote
Safety Engineer Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 hertsnminds if your not fussed about the widescreen of the 610 or actually hearing the street names, then Halfords might be worth a look they are doing a Nuvi 310 Deluxe it has bluetooth hands free capability, traffic reciever and full european mapping for a penny under £300 quid. A very pleased with mine. PS also has the text message facilty and phonebook intergration. Quote

That's what I thought, but couldn't get it to work, waited over 10 mins. Got out of the car, and GPS was locked on within seconds....bizarre really. Quote

Yes, also quite strange that my Bluetooth GPS receiver works perfect when in the glovebox, Usually locks within 2 minutes. ;) Quote
lee_marshuk Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Yes, also quite strange that my Bluetooth GPS receiver works perfect when in the glovebox, Usually locks within 2 minutes. Weird isn't it. This was part of the reason I went for built in sat-nav as well, I mean the satellites are found to a point it can pinpoint location within 5 seconds, and its got a solid lock within about 20. Quote

Sounds tempting but I know I would miss the extra screen space and seeing as the 610T is going for £302 with these guyshttp://www.blokesstuff.com/Product.aspx?Pr...&ProductID=1476 I will probably stick with that. Already have the European maps CD for the eMap so just need a cheap SD card to load them onto. IanBlack 55 VTR+ Quote
Safety Engineer Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 Would recommend the Garmin speed camera database. it's on three months free trial (with unlimited updates during that three months) when you register the unit and get a 'My Garmin' account, you can select the amount of spam they send you from all promotions to just map and unit update information (have just got the unit update for patches and software updates. Have tried Pocket GPS World's database and despite having gone over to charging (£2-00 a month or £20-00 a year rather than Garmins at 50-00 a year) it hasn't improved a great deal (certianly not in Essex), where as Garmin get thier database from the makers of the Cyclops speed camera detectors. Am happier paying Garmin for IMO a better database. Also I have a bundle of free Points of Interest if you want them for all sorts (shops, restuarants, campsites, LUL stations etc, etc), PM with your e-mail or e-mail me direct (can you get my e-mail from this forum?). cyberandy Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 I have the tom-tom go 910 which you can pick up for £399 it has bluetooth hands free, mp3 player and a 20gig hdd plus all the maps etc etc i am chuffed with it. I wish they would cater more for lorry drivers though (weight limits, height limits etc) Quote
