jimbobfruitbat Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Hi, I recently learnt that many cars (not sure which makes) use the IBM Power5 CPU to control various electronic functions. Knowing that these are used in high end computing environments, I'd be interested to know what kind of computing components are used in the C4, if anyone would happen to know? Quote
wozza Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Where did you find out about some makers using the power5 cpu? As that seems a tad overkill to have a 4 way cpu system in a car when it really does not have to do very much. There also quite rare beasts those cpu's and bloody huge. Quote
jimbobfruitbat Posted December 10, 2006 Author Posted December 10, 2006 I was told by IBM themselves. The entry-level p series servers run single or dual core Power5 CPUs. These are relatively common. I have to agree though, it did sound a bit overkill! Quote
wozza Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 See when i think power5 i think of the dual core 4 ways as being the small ones but the main image i associate with them is the MCM 16way 36mb cache beasts. Not the PowerPC processors which are similar but not the same. But doing some research appears that cars can have quite a lot of powerpc based cpus inside them. upwards of 10xcpu's is not uncommon. Would not think you would need such an amount high end cpus to run a car really. Quote
jimbobfruitbat Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 Yes, a few Googlewacks seems to indicate the same thing to me, that it is the PowerPC chip which is found in cars. Motorola (or Freescale) seem to be fairly predominant: search in here:http://www.mdronline.com/publications/epw/...es/epw_146.html and:http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/h...=02Wcbf&tid=FSH Quote
jimbobfruitbat Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 Also:http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584_22-5984265.html Of course, these are nothing to do with the C4, and I bit off-topic I admit, but I'm just curious! Quote
jimbobfruitbat Posted December 13, 2006 Author Posted December 13, 2006 No, you're right. They aren't. I stand corrected. Quote
